Tachometer Cable
« on: June 20, 2011, 10:02:06 »
Tacho cable broke yesterday. Trying to extract the cable. Both tacho and speedo cable are going through
the same bulkhead hole (RHD drive car). The nurled nut is too big to pull through with the speedo cable in place.
How was it installed? I assume the speedo cable nut is just as big. Help!!

Hi Larry,

I think you may have to disconnect the speedo cable at the gearbox end as I think that connection is much smaller.

Hi David, I think that perhaps you are correct. So now how do I remove the speedo
cable with the gearbox (auto) in the car?

Managed to loosen the speedo cable clamp but the cable will not pull out.
Just how much force is needed? Is there a knack to it?

Just tracked some info down in the Wiki, looks like the allen bolt has to be completely removed.
I will give that a try tomorrow.

Hi Larry,

I don't know why but this always seems difficult, the first time I removed my engine I had to leave the cable attached to the gearbox as it just wouldn't come out, needles to say it was very easy once the unit was out. From memory there isn't any special retainer it just seems to stick but you are best completely removing the pinch bolt and applying some gentle leaverage to the clamp with a screwdriver.

Hi, Larry,

The outer cable boss has a cut-out thru which the bolt passes, so needs to be fully removed.

Also be sure not to overtighten the pinch bolt when refitting. You can crack the housing...

Thanks guys I have the cable out, real easy when the bolt is removed.
The pinch housing is broken and looks like it has been for some time.
It has held the cable ok and I think will do again as it is the bolt that
prevents the cable from coming out. The broken part will still act as
a clamp so all should be good.
I have sent the broken tacho cable to a cable repair company to see what they can do.
The outer seems ok so maybe just a new inner will suffice.
Mercedes want £170 for a new cable!!

I like to have the cables made a little longer, it makes for much easier removal of the instrument.

I have checked the play in the tachometer drive shaft, between 1 and 2mm. I understand an injector seal makes
a good shim. Does anyone have the dimensions of said seal. Diameter internal, external and thickness. Thanks
