Luggage Belts
« on: August 02, 2011, 02:42:05 »
I have an early 230SL, with the near vertical spare. I have an original par (2) of luggage belts, I think that other models with the horizontal spare had only one set of belts. Is there enough interest including pictures, buckle type, thickness, etc.? I searched and couldn't find that this subject hasn't been addressed.

I have a late 280 SL that would have used a single belt.  I would be quite interested in purchasing one of yours or having them reproduced.
Thanks,

Before you sell these straps (if that is what you are planning to do), could you please give us some details for those of us who would like to fabricate our own?
Length, width, thickness, color, leather type (presumably cowhide), pictures of buckles and fasteners, etc.
Zoegrlh made a similar request in February 11/2009 (Search: Luggage hold down strap) but all he got in reply were names of who might sell him some.

Thanks in advance - Mait

My 230Sl has provisions for two belts, so I don't want to sell my belts. If there is enough interest, I could take some close up pictures with a ruler and caliper.

My 230SL has two(2) belt sets.  The tongue ends are anchored toward the rear of the car and the buckle ends are anchored under the top(as I remember, modified). They are two ply, stitched along each edge.  They are anchored under a clip.

Anybody have details of the anchor/clip?  Does the anchor just push out?

In general, don't like two ply belts.  Are any of these single ply?

P.S.   Steve, Does your SL have the clip/stud for changing tires?

Glen. What do you mean by clip/stud for changing tires?

Steve, There is a plastic clip on the trunk wall opposite the tire well.  The clip holds a 4" stud(12 mm 1.5, I think).   The stud is used when you change a tire.  The tire going on the car is hung on it.  Makes tire changing alot easier.  Originals are silver and hashed.  Glenn
