When Gunter Engelen wrote the "Mercedes Benz 190 SL - 280 SL Vom Barock zur Pagode" he was allowed access to the MB archives and documents. His material is considered reliable. According to Engelen, the last 250 SL was built in November 1967. The first 250 SL was built 2 Dec 66... about thirty 250's were made in 1966.
As far as the cut-over to the 280 SL, there was an overlap when MB made a few 280's while the 250 was still coming down the line. This was at the end of 1967 when MB made about 50 280 Sl's.
Here's a little auto trivia from Engelen: What was the only year in which MB produced all three 113 car models? Answer: 1967. The last 230 Sl was made 05 January 67, 250's were made all during 1967, and the first few 280's were made beginning 07 December 1967. No 250 SL's were made in Calendar Year 1968.
Caution: while Engelen may be reliable, no one can say for sure that he's always correct, and keep in mind the point of the previous message about Model Year especially in North America where build date and the date on the registration and the car data plate model year are often quite different. The Engelin dates above are all Calendar Year dates.
