Power Steering Pump Seal replacement
« on: September 23, 2011, 16:30:30 »
I removed the Vickers pump (conical shaft) due to a leak at the seal where the rotating shaft protrudes.  How is the seal replaced?  Do I dig it out with the tip of a screwdriver, slide the new seal over the shaft and press into place?  Or must the pump housing be taken apart to gain proper access.  Thanks for your time.

Paul, you can just pop the old seal out if you do not intend to replace the o=ring seal  seal inside the pump.  Just drive the new seal in place with a flange tool or the correct size sleeve (socket or such). Grease the lips of the seal where it contacts the shaft before installation.

A simplel universal seal puller tool (hooked-shaped on the end) is most often used to pry the old seals out. It is not very special. Whatever works is fine.
