Alfred,

I have been working with a collector on the east coast who has been very helpful as far as contacts to inspect a potential car.  He has a pagoda and I told him about the quality pads the team has produced.  He asked if I could help him get on the list.  Would you put me down for 2 LHD in the next run?

Thank you

I fully understand what you are referring to. I too have several senior age auto owners/enthusiasts in my circle of friends, and they possess much knowledge and experience (and some super nice cars), but never sit in front of a computer... Of course, I strive to support them in any way I can by use of the web and digitsing images etc.

Hello:  I received my pads today, they look great.  One question.  In a post from 66andBlue it was stated that complete installation instructions would be provided with each pad.  Mine arrived without any instructions.  I can probably figure it out, but if there are any tips or suggestions in the instructions, they may be very helpful to avoid mishaps.  Perhaps a copy could be posted on the site.  Thanks

I received my firewall pad today and it looks frickin' awesome!  A big thanks to Dave Gallon and everyone involved in the recreation.  Now I don't feel bad about the body shop removing my original one when I gave them explicit instructions not to (at least they didn't fill in or grind away the fender notches ;))!  Hopefully this one will last another 40 years...

Success has many fathers but failure is an orphan.
We are all very satisfied that thus far there are no complaints.
But nobody has any suggestions for improvements or changes? We have another production run coming up and want to hear!

Alfred,

The only suggestion I have is if you could provide the benefit of some of your research on the foam and jute in case some  decide to use that as a backing. Not sure what sources are out there for this. You all may know best from your research.  This is not to suggest in any way that the felt backing was the wrong choice! I just know there are some who are sticklers for this sort of detail.

I'll chime in with a suggestion.  I love the fact that the firewall pad does not have the VIN plate pre-cut for the European cars (mine was a US delivered car so I don't have a need for this).  I think the cuts in the firewall pad look like sh!@t and really detract from the uniformity of the firewall pad and a tidy engine compartment. If your car is a US delivered car like mine the VIN plate is mounted in the driver side door jamb.  For those that have a need for the VIN plate pre-cut firewall pad, my suggestion would be for a buyer to be able to specify their choice, pre-cut or uncut.  Kind of like the Early Ford Broncos, uncut fenders or cut fenders ;)...

George,
you hit the nail on the head - did we ever have discussions about jute and foam backing!  :o
Tom Colitt insisted on foam, whereas Franz at Silver Star, who restores cars to a very high level, preferred yellow jute.
I tried very hard to come up with a 4-5 mm thick jute but had no success. The closest is a product made for older Jaguar and other British cars called Hardura sold by Heritage Upholstery (http://www.heritagetrim.com/m_aboutmaterials.htm).  Unfortunately, it is only 2mm thick or a bit less.  According to their web site it is milled in the UK but I could net get any information whether they make a thicker product. My hunch is that the material for the aftermarket pads that are sold by SLS  are made by the same company.
One possibility is to buy one of those sets from SLS or Buds Benz and glue our material on top (w/o the felt of course).  We did that on one prototype that was sold later on eBay to test the market.

Nate,
I agree, having to separate versions for 230SL (and European 280SL) and US 280SL would be nice but then we would have had to pay for another die and then ponder how many of each to make.  That was the reason why we have the VIN cut out only in the felt backing.  Now if someone wants to order a set with the front already cut I think that for a small fee the wish could be accommodated.  :)

Any other suggestions/ recommendations out there?

Alfred,

Yeah, I had seen that hardura material some time ago when the discussion on this first started and thought that may be a good place to search for someone who could replicate the pattern. I'm sure you're right about SLS and others using this as the source for their pebble grain firewall pads. Never did really like that material but as you well know, it was the only alternative until now. What source did Tom recommend for the foam and what thickness? I noticed from some old pictures of my own footwells from before my restoration that the backing down in the footwells was actually foam and I may consider backing those areas with foam instead of the felt. Right now they are covered in the same jute-backed "hardura type" material that my firewall is backed with.

Bets,

George

Hi George,
Tom C. insists on 4mm polyurethane yellow foam and plans to glue it on once he finds the material.
You can see that stuff at almost any upholsterer but usually 1/4" and 1/2" (or more) thick.
But it is a bit course and I am not sure how durable. Go to the McMaster-Carr web site, search for foam and then for color=yellow (http://www.mcmaster.com/#foam/=ew1nbh) and you'll see what is available: Temperature Range    +50° to +120° F
and no bargain either!

Alfred,

I would like to get two sets of the LHD pads-complete for the interior as well but if that is not ready, I will take just the engine area.

Thanks to you and others that pulled this off-truly the "holy grail" of items.

Best,
