Firewall pad - color changes?
« Reply #154 on: November 16, 2011, 06:33:53 »
Some of you who have received the pads asked me about the brownish surface hue and whether this was original so I decided to answer here in case more are interested in what we have found out.
Of course, everybody who as ever seen a good firewall pad knows that it is black and a bit shiny and the many photos that were posted in this topic and the one before by 49er and thelews, and many others demonstrate that quite well. Clearly, our material is not pitch black and not shiny, but then it also wasn't exposed to a hot engine compartment and oil fumes for 45 years either. Obviously we do not know what the color of the very first material was but we do know what the color was of a pad that was bought in 1974, and even better, we know how this color has changed after installation.
The owner of a 250SL bought two pads in 1974 and installed one in his car but saved the other one since he knew that the material has a limited life time. Dave Gallon, who is currently restoring the car, removed the pad again and guess what, it is now black but the other one is a medium gray as shown in the attached photos.  The owner believes that the gray one hasn't changed color over the years since he had unwrapped it a few times to be used as a template to cut bulk material and believes that he would have noticed.
I have taken these photos in the shade and in full sunshine and on two different backgrounds, hoping that this will provide a good impression for how the surface color has changed over the last 27 years.
So, here we have a pad that was and still is gray - but not brownish - and that turned black after installation. We do not know if our material will turn black over time but given this example we think it might change too.
Since we are all used to seeing a black firewall pad and some may not want to wait an obvious solution is a color change. Because I can only attach four photos I'll show the options in my next post.

Firewall pad - color changes?
« Reply #155 on: November 16, 2011, 06:59:19 »
Here are some ideas and photos showing how one can change the color of the pads to reflect more what we are used to seeing in cars.
The simplest is to use black shoe polish, it is cheap, works well and gives you an idea what the pad will look like. It is also somewhat reversible because the color is NOT water proof and will wash out again.
A more permanent solution is to use a vinyl dye and one has the choice between matte and gloss.  I have use Dupli-Color HVP 104 (gloss) and HVP 106 (matte) and have shown the results to Brian Peters at Motoringinvestments.  He prefers it glossy and and as thick a layer as possible to simulate old pads. My preference is more a thin layer and matte. Fortunately, the first coat of even the glossy paint will be matte because it is absorbed rapidly by the fabric and one needs to add several thin layers to achieve a gloss and for this reason one can stop at any time once the desired sheen is achieved.
But be careful if you do this, apply very thin coats only! This spray paint can be a bit uneven and one should never return a stroke above the material but only outside since the return point will get more paint and it shows. The good part is that once it has dried for several days it can be oversprayed with an acrylic dye, for example, Dupli-Color DA1603 to even out the appearance.
Her are the photos, you be the judge.

Hi Alfred,

After volunteering to wait for the second batch, i sent you a PM confirming that I would take three pads one for each of my pagodas if possible.
If you could add that to your list of orders I would be happy, since I seem to be missing from your list in your postimg on the 14th of nov.

Some I meet has already done the pebble finished fire wall pad. I do not care for it  and would like to place an order for
my USA 1968 280SL LHD. I am sure ours will be better. Please let me know when it is complete and if you can send me price and pictures of the  final product.

8 years ago I put the after market pad on my car. works well was cut nicely. But I plan to repaint the car and have some body work done, it will not be a show car but a nice driver and club display car.

Here's a photo from the April 1965 edition of Australian Sports Car World showing the firewall pad disintegrating on an almost brand new 230sl. No hope of an original 230sl pad surviving.

Jaymanek,

Have added you to the UK list.

In due course when the pads are cut, packaged in bulk to UK and are ready for distribution, you will be contacted and given a Paypal invoice for payment and seek a shipping address.
