If you can''t pick out the "odd" car in this car park then you don't deserve to own a Mercedes
We think the shot was taken around Febuary 1965 at Broad Beach South East Queensland, Australia.
The "Rose" is surrounded by lots of Australian Built GM Holdens, Fords, Chryslers, Volkswagens and BMC Minis

what a beautiful Gullwing, looks like it had gotten a small dent on the rear fender

Hi Basem,

Probably like you, ever since my teenage years I've dreamt of owning a Gullwing, in 1974 a friend of mine left me a 300SL Roadstar to sell on his behalf while he was overseas and we could not get $5000.00 for it, I was short of money at the time and would have bought it myself.

Don't think its a dent in the left hand rear guard, more likely the sun reflected off some chrome on another car.

How's your 280 3.5 Coupe ? another one on my wish list.

Parden my ignorence but what is a "bakkie" ?
Thing I see opposite the Gullwing is a "Bettle" with what could be a Triump TR parked beside it.

The Ute is a GM Holden ute, very common here.. I think the TR might be an MGA with a possible TR further away?

oh I love the 300SL roadsters even more, may be you can look up the owner now and offer to buy it back (hoping the car is still surviving).

I love my 280SE 3.5, I got it from an elderly gentleman a couple of years ago. it is in great physical shape, but the engine needs an expert (hard to find one around here). I am sure a fuel distributor adjustment or calibration is the main issue.

I hope you will get yours soon to add to your very nice collection of Mercedeses (and hopefully for a great price

)

I would say that the one behind the Beetle opposite the Gullwing is an MGA 1600 (dual tail lights as opposed to the single multifunctional ones on MGA 1500 and TR2/3) - this is getting semi-nerdy :-)

A couple of days behind - Walter the only people I know of who use Bakkie are South Africans - any connection there? The Aussies use Ute and the US use Pickup.

Never thought I would see anyone else (apart from expats) use the term bakkie as it is generally a term used here in South Africa only.

Ponton bakkies are quite popular with collectors here and is about the only pontons that command really high prices (except for the ponton cabs and coupés).
I know of one here in Durban that is fairly rusted and the owner refuses to sell because he wants to restore it someday... :'(

Ponton based utilities as we call them here in Australia are very common, in fact Ford Motor Company Aust claim to have built and marketed the first of type anywhere in the world in 1934. It was response to demand by farmers, something to take produce to market in, and mother to church on Sundays while the kids rode in the back.

Well now I have an anouncement, I have bought one myself yesterday, a 1972 108 280SE 3.5, needs an engine out bare metal re-spray in dark blue to match our 300. also thinking of fitting a diff, air bags and sway bar from a 109 300 in order to raise the load carring capacity

It made it home today after a 150K drive, some vibrations at 110 KPH, air con works as does the heater, windscreen wipers OK if you pull the hazard warning switch on.

Will probably not see the road again for 6 to 9 months
