ok, i have an oil filter, an auto trans fluid reservoir, and what is the third one?  Near the auto trans res, and on the side of the engine opposite the intake runners.  What is this?

Hi

It could be the fuel filter.

Sounds like the fuel filter indeed - sitting upright. And your second item sounds more like the power steering fluid container (black, wingnut on top). The auto transmission does not have an external fluid container.

Thanks Cees.  Right you are.  New owner, first time under the car.  Lubed all the zerks, front and back (wow-pushing out decades old grease-what a workout!), changed the oil (what a disgusting mess in oil filter can - all new gaskets now) and onto the fuell system.  I see a washer or seal on the end of the bolt, and I've ordeded the new stuff from M-B - what is the recommended torque on the bolt that holds the fuel fiter can tight?  The old metal washer or seal was broken, and I don't want to destroy the new one.

It has to be fairly tight. If you see a leak or you can smell fuel tighten it bit until it stops.

Thanks.  I'll set my torque wrench to "know what the heck you are doing".

Also look at the bottom of the bolt head and where the seal ring mates to the housing. Make sure there are no burrs or deep scrathes. A Seal ring won't seal with that damage.
