1971 280 SL US - Power Steering -
Hi guys, it looks like my power steering pump is leaking. The mechanic says (and I guess its buried pretty good) says its a Vickers - and says he has located an OEM replacement for $500 but apparently comes in two versions and doesn't know which one it will be until he takes it out, and needless to say doesn't want to do that until he has a replacement.
Any thoughts? Should I find a rebuild? From where?
Now for the complicated question, as here is the story. The car had been sitting, and I noticed the power steering was making noise, I filled up the reservoir, and it was working fine.
I was driving it around and all of a sudden a felt a bumping at higher speeds (it would come and go) could feel it mostly through my feet - but a pretty good fast bumping as if a tire had an issue. Then I smelled a burning smell, and I swear the breaks felt softer than normal.
I stopped and looked at it and the smoke was comming from the front right near the wheel well. got back in the car and drove it, the buming was comming and going. intermittant. We don't know what that story is, maybe breaks, but seems odd this is coninciding with the burning and the power steering pump issue.
Thanks, Andy
