Correct early tex?
« on: November 09, 2011, 12:19:56 »
I was at a Mercedes show here in Perth last weekend and  saw a 250SL with what I thought were very well preserved original caviar tex seat covers. The owner told me that they were in fact replacements from Millers. They were extremely good reproductions with the correct fine grained vinyl and basket weave, and excellent fit. I believe they are probably the same type as those installed by Bob (Cascadia) in his recent 230sl restoration.

I am wondering why this correct material only seems to be available in caviar? All other colours seem to be the later coarse grained vinyl with pinpoint texture in the pleated seat panels, not the fine grained vinyl with basket weave.

Does anyone know if the correct material and pattern can be obtained in alternative colours?

Hello Dave,

Of course I do remember Bob (Cascadia)'s car. :D

But still, do you have any pictures?
No idea why it is so hard to obtain the correct vinyl (like MB Tex) with the correct grain... ???

Probably because most owners don't care too much about this or they change for leather or they have 280 SLs which have (at least the later cars) a more coarse grain of the MB Tex anyway.

If the demand for the correct material were high, the shops would offer it.
See our  firewall insulation thread.

Thanks Achim,
I think your reasoning is right. Bit disappointing though.
Here's a picture of Bob's car (with reversed seat pads ;))

Next question Achim: who in your opinion supplies the best leather interiors for 230sl?
