Power Steering Return Hoses
« on: November 11, 2011, 18:55:01 »
I found my power steering return hose from the reservoir to the box leaking on my 1966 230SL. I mearsured the pipe from the box at around 12mm and ordered some bulk hose. However, after getting the hose off, I found that the pipes flare into a larger size.

I am quessing that the size needed for the return hose to be around 15.5mm. Not sure what was used since the line I removed measured out at approximately 5/8 inch or less. I can't seem to find any vendors that say what size the hose actually is.

Anyone know what the bulk hose size requirement is for the return hoses?

Since I would need to mail order sizes in millimeters, would a 5/8 inch hydraulic hose from the local Napa store do the trick?

Thanks,
Tom L

Call the classic center.  They will sell the correct size.  The price is reasonable too.

Hi Brad,

I found the proper size was 15mm.

I need to get some kind of parts listing for these vehicles before I end up having a parts store of my own.

Every time I start up on a new found vehicle, I always end up ordering all kinds of parts I don't really need. The 230SL is no different.

I tell myself that I will put the extra parts in a bin, just in case I might need them someday. The bin after some 40 years,  is getting really big and there is no inventory system.

Before I go overboard on this project, can someone direct me to where I can find a parts catalog with the proper part numbers?

Thanks again,
Tom L.

Hello Tom,
take a look here first:
http://www.sl113.org/wiki/Documents/SparePartsList
and then search on eBay for this parts list (p/n 10126) but make sure that you do not buy the "parts catalog" that came with every car since it does NOT contain part numbers.
The p/n for those catalogs all start with 12xxx, see: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/Documents/PartsCatalog

However, be also aware that the part numbers in the list are the original ones and many were replaced over the years but at least it gives you a start especially when you input the number into the electronic parts catalog (EPC): http://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/

Hello Alfred,

Thank you for the good info.

It will certainly make things a lot more easy when it comes to ordering parts.
