Accessing the Ext. rear view mirror....

Hey folks,

Is it possible to get to my rear view mirror by removing the small chrome trim on the door,  just in front of the mirror?

No such luck Hank,

You need to remove the door trim, which means removing the window winder, the covers around the door opening catch, the chrome to the rear of the door holding the door trim, the cover over the door locking mechanism, the screw under the arm rest, the chrome around the door catch mechanism, the chrome plate at the front of the door you mentioned, then jiggle the door trim up from the base and window clip holders and remove, then you can access the two nuts that afix the mirror to the door.
\And whilst you are in there, check that the window winding mechanism is ok, oil and ensure that the window sliders and the fitting that goes into it are still attached to the window. make sure that the drain holes are still clean and working, and ensure that you put back the plastic film moisture cover when closing it all back.
 
After you have done that you can have a beer.

I do believe I'll give that project a miss, for now - - and BTW, "a beer"??     I would certainly require more than just ONE beer after all that !!!

Its not as hard as it sounds Hank.  If you just methodically go through it it would take no longer than 30 minutes to get the door panel off.  The most difficult part is sitting the panel back on at the bottom and at the same time latching it on the trim hooks at the top of the door.

I have been having trouble with both with my glass alignment and door locking and have had my passenger side off at least half a dozen times in the past month and still need to do it again

Door panel off is easy. It must be, I can do it and I am ham fisted, impatient and inept.

On is the reversal of removal...

Has anyone replaced the plastic/tarp? Mine is/was glued (one missing altogether) and in replacing it I was wondering about using velcro or similar in patches to stick the plastic to the door chassis. I guess there may be an issue with clearance with the door card (there being very little) for the velcro but surely an easier on/off...

I don't think velcro would give the moisture-proof seal you need. Some type of flexible sticky seal would seem best.

Just glue it back on.  A spray adhesive like 3M will work just fine.  Spray it on, wait until tacky, stick it on the door.
