What name did you give your Pagoda?
« on: February 04, 2012, 23:12:40 »
Since joining this site a few years ago and now reading Michael's Pagoda Style book, I notice a number of people have given their Pagodas a name or nick name.  I thought I would ask what name have you given your Pagoda and how did you come up with the name or why do you use that particular name.  A friend of mine has an older Toyota Land Cruiser that he calls Mortimer.  He says the look of the vehicle and its condition just said Mortimer to him.  I do not have a name for mine but would like to think of one and hopefully it will come to me one day soon.

So, what name have you given your Pagoda and why?

Hi Marcus,
you've read thread 1360, right? It's got like 5 years worth of members' posts about the names of their Pagodas. Cees even summarized them all.

Mine is named Dagny. According to the Auftragsnummer, it was first sold in Sweden, so I looked at lists of Swedish names. A woman's name because if it's possible for car models to have gender, Pagodas are definitely feminine. (Mustangs, Ferraris, Chrysler 300's. . . are masculine.) However, that's not to say I would criticize another member who gave theirs a masculine name.

I didn't want to choose the name of a relative or close friend. I've got aunts and cousins named Helge, Gerlinde, Erika, Monika, Gudrun, Jutta, Nora, Henriette, Sophia and more, so those were all *out*. But I rather like the idea of a specific character from fiction, and I really enjoyed Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged," so Dagny is named after Dagny Taggart. I also considered Dominique, in honour of Dominique Francon in "The Fountainhead," but that sounds too much French, not Swedish.

For a sombre touch, I discovered that Dagny's name day is September 11, so that reminds me of how our world was changed on that day.

Just to flesh out the topic, my Acura RSX is named Thumper, my wife's Honda Fit is named Fifi, and formerly I drove 2 Chevrolet wagons named Rigel, after the bright star in Orion. In fact the Chevrolets had air conditioners named Max and Norm. I even had a VCR named Ted. I guess I like names.

Peter.
And I thought you car was named '' D 230SL '' after your wife no doubt. I hope you noticed that I straighened her out a bit - the front plate holder that is.

Hope your drive home was pleasant.

Hi Dan,
yes, the drive home was Grrreat! There's a post in another thread about "fear factor." You "straightened out" the whole car.

I came to the licence plate "D 230SL" because I figured "230SL" would not be available in Ontario. Someone else has it, I presume. Maybe we should start a gallery of Pagoda licence plates here on the Forums. The "D" could indeed stand for Dianne, my wife's name, or for Dagny, or Deutschland. I was thinking specifically about the Euro licence plates and how they have the country code included on the far left.

And indeed, thanks for straightening out the bracket. I like how the bracket you used reaches a few centimetres out from the bumper.

You can read mine in the Pagoda Style, page 14.  The name is BCW, but you will have to get a copy of PS to understand the meaning of why BCW stands for Booze and Cheap Women.

As many of you may know, I call my car the '' Red Rocket '' but you may not know how I came up with that name. It's red and pretty fast, but that's not where the name comes from.

There's a guy by the name of Sammy Hagar and he's a guitar player. He had his own band for a while and also payed with Van Halan when the band was called Van Hagar.

Sammy was known as the '' Red Rocker '' because he has red hair and he also liked to wear a red jump suit while on stage. I saw him in concert once and not only could the guy play guitar, he was was all over the stage and quite the show man.
He wrote a song caled '' I can't drive 55 '' back when the national spped limit was 55 everywhere in the USA. It was supposed to save fuel but all it really did was put people to sleep........ in long lines of traffic....... all going the same speed........

So, since I don't like to drive 55, and the car is red, I called it the Red Rocket in honour of the red rocker. I never bought any of his records and wasn't a big fan, but it sort of works for the car.

And now you know the rest of the story.

Maude - named after a character in a 70's Danish TV-series, who - although good looking and from a posh family, had a tendency to go "lie down" when faced with opposition :-)

The nickname of my Pagoda was given by a neighbor. She was indeed used to see me fiddle on the W111 Coupe and one day she saw me under the Pagoda after I just bought it as I was sorting the brakes out. As they are of a similar darkish color she asked me jockingly what happened to my car, how comes it had shrunk like that ? She went on calling it the "baby car" and this is what we call it now.

I call her Benita,  named after a very beautiful, athletic and innocent appearing German girl whom I knew long ago.  Benita was not one to mess with so I stayed on her good side as there were tears and destruction for those who crossed her.   The name seemed appropriate for a beautiful car which demands the upmost of respect.

Pickles...because she is dark green.  I was way tipsy when I came up with such a silly name!  But it caught on with my friends so I decided to keep it as that.

A few years ago, my son christened my 280SL the Buggy, as in horse and buggy.  He now is wondering if he will get to drive the car when he gets his license (still 5 years off).

;D  I got a good chuckle from one of the names listed.    My 69 is named Ingrid.   She's very elegant - but at a party, she's not as funny as Pickles :D
