Fulfilling the Dream

1963, the first year of the Mercedes Benz 230SL, was my eighteenth year.  My most impressionable years had been formed by big; BIG tailfins and my personality solidified by quad headlights, naugahyde rolled and pleated bench seats, floor shifters and rock-and-roll music.  But by 1963, the tailfins were gone.  Life was still good, partly due to the continued life of quad headlights and vinyl interiors color coordinated with two and even three tone paint jobs.  Friday and Saturday nights were spent cruising from the A&W Root Beer joint at one end of town to the Dairy Queen at the other end of town, with short but lakes-pipes-noisy loops around a couple of other hamburger joints in between.  The late teenage girls in shorts serving shakes on roller skates and dancing to rock-and-roll helped to make life good in the American Mid-west.

But then I saw a photograph of a 230SL, soon to be called the “Pagoda”.  My 1940 In-line 6-cylinder Chevy pickup with its split-manifold and dual lakes pipes completely lost its glow.

High School gave way to college, college to university, university to industry.  The pickup truck became a sedan.  Cruising gave way to grocery shopping and occasionally dining out.  One of the girls in shorts grew up and married me.  But I never forgot the Pagoda.  Even if it was more of a girly car than muscle car, it didn’t matter.  I still wanted one – I NEEDED ONE!

February 1989, Detroit suburbs, a hotel reception room where a banquet is being held for auto industry suppliers.  I’m now a 44 year-old relatively successful engineering executive in the U.S. auto industry.  I spot a supplier from North Carolina that I’ve not seen for several years, so I wander over to say hello.  A few niceties and discussions of times past, then I remember that a few years ago, he bought a ’67 230SL that one of his employees had imported from Italy.

“Do you still have that Mercedes?” I ask.  “Yeah, do you want to buy it?” he replies.  My heart starts skipping beats and I manage to get out, “What would you want for it?”  He grabs a price out of the air and I ask, “When would be a good time for me to come down to North Carolina to see it?”

“How about next week?” he says.

I manage to say, without passing out, “OK, I’ll fly down on a one-way ticket, you pick me up at the airport and I’ll look it over.  If I like it, I’ll give you a certified check and drive it back.  If I don’t, you can drive me back to the airport.”

Well, I flew down, he picked me up in the Pagoda, I drove it, I looked it over, I gave him the check, His wife gave me a picnic basket full of food and books-on-tape, he took a photo of his wife and me beside the car, and I drove it back to Michigan, stopping only for gasoline.  The cable to the heater core was broken and I almost froze while driving all night.  I didn’t even know enough to pop the grommet and flip the heater core control valve lever with my finger.

I’ve had it for twenty-three years and am just now deep into its first, but thorough, restoration.

Even ratty, it was more pleasant to drive than my other cars.  I can’t wait to get it back together.

No.  Only memories.  They say you can never go back anyway.  I've tried other times, other places.  It never worked.  It was always disappointing.  Better to keep the memories.

Hello Tom, great story and I too fell in love with the car when I first saw one in '64  and at the ripe old age of 22 I succumbed to that love and bought my 1st '67 250 SL followed by a couple of years later, my 280SL that is still parked out in my garage today . Hey Tom,
Thank you for sharing that wonderful story with us.  I like almost everything about cars but probably love to hear stories like yours the best.  You know, barn finds, father & son car stories etc.  Makes me feel like I am not the only one that can fall in love with moving art!

You guys are all very kind with your comments.  John, I loved your story.

I was just sitting here perusing the site and looking at old threads.  I started getting nostalgic and decided to put into words my feelings about my car, but starting with the first time I saw a photo of one.  On a Southeast Missouri cotton, wheat and soybean farm, about half way from Memphis to St. Louis, there was no chance of seeing an actual 230SL in 1963.  Most four-wheeled vehicles were tractors.  A photo in Life Magazine or the Saturday Evening Post had to do.  It was in the late sixties before I saw a real one.

I found a thread on the H.A.M.B. forum about old drive-in restaurants, you know, the ones with car-hops.  That's a site worth spending a few hours with.  There's one thread of vintage photos with, I think, 24,000 posts.  It takes weeks to see just that one thread, at least if you have a life, it does.

I like stories as much as you guys do, so post yours.  Re-awaken those memories.

Not to pile on but.. yes very cool story. Its amazing how these cars leave such lasting impressions. For many of you it was seeing them from afar that did you in -- for me it was up close. Shortly after my Dad went out and bought one for my mom, there it was in the garage. I was hooked at 17 --- when I sat in the car for the first time, held the big old steering wheel and looked out over that classic curved hood through the windshield... Still love that feeling!

I bought my car in NC too and flew down on a one way ticket - I had every intention of buying my car.  Like yours, it's also an Italian car. You beat me by four years though as I bought mine in Dec. 1993. We were lucky that the heater was sort of working and we had clear weather for the drive home which two days.

 I also bught a 280SL in 1989 but I sold it as part of a restoration after I had it for 10 years or so. I think that ar is still around Toronto.

Hello, my name is Fritz and I am living in Germany. In my younger days dad always drove Mercedes S-Class, but every time we went to the MB-Dealer I was looking at the Pagodas and asked him to buy one of these. Of course he never did. For myself I always admired the Pagoda and when I got older I started searching for one. But I never found the right one. I had very specific ideas of how the car should look like. It should be a 280 SL because of all the latest specs like disc brakes, automatic transmission, horsepower, etc. Then it should be white with leather interior. And at least I wanted a car where I knew something about the owners history. Hard to find.

In 2010 then I brought my wife's car to the MB-Dealer for inspection. In front of the building there stood a 280 SL Automatic Pagoda. I told the man at the desk that I always wanted a car like this. He told me that he could get me the telephone number of the owner because he might want to sell the car. It was owned by a not so young Doctor who only brought the car to the inspection every once a year and didn't drive it in between. I got very excited. When I contacted the man I learned that it was the car of his mother but he wouldn't use it at all. It was in first hand ownership, had 63k kilometers on the odometer and it came with all the original papers, old documents, brochures, etc. When I asked him about selling the car he wasn't really sure about it. So it took me three month to convince him. Then in February last year he called and told me today would be his mothers birthday and he was sure that she would be happy if I would take over the car. We fixed a good price for each of us and on the day I picked up the car he also gave me the original luggage set and some old family pictures. Since that day I put a lot of kilometers on the odometer and learned a lot about my Pagoda. The car got a new painting in the 80'ties but it was not done very well. But they sealed the body in '74 and '79 which makes it nearly rust free. I have all the receipts for the inspections which where all done at the same MB-Dealership. They know the whole history of the car and confirmed that everything is original and perfect.

Sometimes good things come to those who (have to) wait!

Thanks Fritz for posting that wonderful experience.  It must be nice to know everything about the history of your car.  I love mine, but I know nothing about it before 1989.  If I at least had a license number from its time in Italy, I could access the Italian ACI-PRA and learn its complete history of owners.  But I will just have to be happy with owning it.
