I've got two cars with strange model years on the title relative to the car's manufacture date. I know that for cars built in the later part of a calendar year they were often titled as the following model year. As I understand it, in the US there was no standard practice and the model year date was decided by the selling dealer.
But I've got the opposite; Model years the precede the manufacture date!
1) Titled '64, built June '65. I would expect this to be titled as a '65 or '66.
2) Titled '65, built July '66. I would expect this to be titled as a '66 or a '67.
Anyone seen this before, or have any theories? I currently have 2 of my own. When I bought them, both were titled in PA and both were previously titled in AL. Also, both cars were first titled in PA at the same time, which suggests they were bought together.
Theory 1) They were originally titled based on when they were ordered, not when they were delivered.
Theory 2) When they were brought into PA the model year dates got messed up.
