Need Help With Dip Stick, Oil, for AT in 69 280SL
« on: March 26, 2012, 00:03:47 »
Hey guys... after looking through the archives on this topicality, I am empty handed.  So I'll float it out to you:   I'm afraid my dipstick tube may not match my transmission as it blowes fluid out the top with regularity.  I drew a quart out and it no longer does this.  i am doing a complete rebuild but am afraid my tube is too long.  To make matters more challenging, my tranny is not the one on my data card and I may be about the fifth owner.  Not an uncaommon thing, but I still cant go by the VIN to help me identify the correct dip stick tube.  two were made for these cars, one is longer than the other.  I could back into the solution if someone could tell me how much fluid this car is supposed to have.  Given data:  Ger Type:  113 2700 801 and Nr: 002501 stamped righ below on the id tag.  Can anyone help me riddle this out?  Thanks much!!

I had problems with my fluid rising and it was a plugged vent a top the trans. You can get to it by removing the access plate on the trans hump. May not be your problem but worth checking.

Hi, Just replaced my auto dip stick tube with a new one from Mercedes.  Parts Mgr asked me what my VIN # was.  After I told him, he said good!  Your car takes the lower cost one.
$60.00.  There is another tube as you mentioned.   That one is over $250.00.  Parts Mgr could not tell me why it was so much more expensive.  It appears that the later cars use the more expensive one.  My 68 was well under the VIN # that requires the pricey one.

As a side note.  The replacement tube was correct in every respect except the bracket.  Not even close to the original bracket. I had to modify the mounting bracket, and use another mounting location to make it work.

I can give you the VIN #'s for the 2 tubes if needed.  On another trip to the parts counter, I advised the Mgr of the problem I had. He printed out all the VIN # info, and the 2 different part #'s.

Let me know if I can help.

It would be great if you could send me that VIN listing.  this would be helpful.  I bout the 60.00 tube and it bolts perfectly.  but it is longer that the one I had before.  I cant quite figure this out but your VIN data will certainly help.  You can email it to me at jprothero600@gmail.com if you like.  This would be terrific!  thanks rb

Here is the info on the 2 auto dip stick tubes:

part# A 113 270 02 84 Fits up to Chassis # 011947  (Last 6 digits of Vin)  This is the one I used.  $60.00

part# A 113 270 05 84 Fits from Chassis # 011948 (Last 6 digits of Vin)  This is the pricey one.  I was told $250.00.  Parts Mgr could not tell me why it is so much more, or what the difference was between the 2 part #'s.

As Mentioned, the tube I used fit perfectly, but required a major modification to the mounting bracket.

I think these part #'s only apply to the 280SL.  113044.

Hope this helps.
