5 Speed AUTO
« on: April 20, 2012, 11:35:42 »
I'm not sure this has been discussed so...

Stickel/Pagoden Center do a 5 speed conversion for an Auto box ( http://www.pagoden-center.de/  - see customisation)

Has anyone looked at/investigated this?
Has anyone any idea what it would entail? I am sure it's more complex than dropping an extra cog in a casting....

Thanks

Would think this is a refit of a 5-speed auto?

Mercedes introduced a 5-speed automatic in 1990 on certain R129 and W124 models (per Daimler media website.)  Maybe it's one of those?

Alternatively, perhaps, a fitment of a 3rd party unit in the same way that some have placed Getrag and Tremec manuals in the Pagoda?

Just guesses here, and not certain they would reveal their "secrets"...

Now that's something I would be very interested in especially if it also replaces the ridiculous first gear with something that can actually be used properly. I've sent them an email and nipped out to buy a lottery ticket.

I would also be interested in what they are using and doing to install a 5 speed Auto.

Michael,

Kate has not seen "her" car yet, it is still 300km away getting lots of work done on it.  I have until September 2013 which is our 30th anniversary of meeting and 20th wedding anniversary and its to be her gift.

50+ Pagodas in Canberra in March next year, now there is a conflict ;D ;D

But an updated 5 speed auto would be nice.

The 5 speed as fitted to later 124 cars has an electronic control system. For that reason alone I wouldn't want to fit it to a Pagoda.

I was looking linto this last night and I agree that there does not seem to be a 5 speed overdrive auto trans that doesn't have an electronic control units that would make it a nightmare to install.
HOWEVER, the Volvo 240's and 740's used the Aisin Warner AW71 overdrive 4 speed that used a single wire via a relay to activate the OD.  You lose the very low gear of the original trans but gain a .80 to 1 overdrive.  The bellhousing is removable so you can make a proper casting or adaptor and they are cheap as chips.  The caveat is that it might not fit the transmission tunnel.
