In results announced on 1-May, Pagoda Style has been designated as a winner of a silver medal in the 2012 IPPY Awards for independent publishers.
This is the 16th annual Independent Publisher Book Awards, honoring the year’s best independently published titles. The “IPPY” Awards were conceived as a broad-based, unaffiliated awards program open to all members of the independent publishing industry, and are open to authors and publishers worldwide who produce books written in English and intended for the North American market. The sponsors define “independent” as 1) independently owned and operated; 2) operated by a foundation or university; or 3) long-time independents that became incorporated but operate autonomously and publish fewer than 50 titles a year.
This year, there were over 4,000 entries in 72 categories. A glance through the winners list shows that very few of the winning titles--only 4 besides Pagoda Style--were self-published. Most were a product of small independent publishers or well-known University press operations. When Princeton University Press, Getty Publications, and the Carnegie Museum of Art are competing with entries, it's good company!
The awards are to be presented in New York City on Monday, June 4th. If I can make it, I will--and hope that those in the NY area would be able to join me.
Congratulations to the 66 contributors, artists and "early adopters" that made Pagoda Style possible.
