Injection Pump - Missing Full Range Adjustment
« on: June 06, 2012, 18:41:29 »
I have 69 280SL with injection pump model PES 6 KL 70 B 120 R20Y. Car appears to be original and complete. Engine runs well when cold but at temp, and about 4000 rpm, it occasionally misses when under load. Points, plugs, condenser and ignition wires have been replaced and timing is on the money. WRD assembly checks out. I suspected fuel mixture and attemped to adjust the "full range screw" shown in the manuals, only to find that it does not exist. Thre is simply a spring loaded lever that seems to rest on the casing near the entry of the cap screw that covers the port that I assumed was for making the adjustment. There doesn't appear to be anything missing. Anyone have a similiar experience? Was this an alternate design and if so how was the "full range mixture" to be adjusted.
Thanks for taking an interest.

Hello,

Your full range screw should be accessible after the cap screw is removed.

Joe,
Thanks so much for your reply. Please take a look at the attached image. I have indicated location of the guide and cap screw. I have removed the cap screw and inserted a screw driver, but could not locate the adjusting screw. I removed the upper solenoid to get a look at the internals and could not find an adjusting mechanism, only a spring loaded, hinged lever, the lower portion of which faces the guide hole. I could not see any adjusting mechanism or parts to which an adjusting screw could have been mounted. In other words it looks like it was intended to be the way that it is. Is it possible that some pumps were built this way?
Again Joe, thanks for your help.
Bob

Problem solved, thanks to a very friendly phone conversation and great advice from Robert at Jerry Fairchild Industries.

This pump is equipped with two solenoids. The top one activates the lever mentioned in my earlier posts, and that lever hides the full range adjustment screw. Loosening the 24mm bolt that is near the throttle linkage a couple of mm's frees up the lever so that the adjustment becomes accessible.

So now I have richened the mixture a few clicks and our pagoda runs like  new.

Many thanks to all.
