Apple i-pod Meets Europa II Stereo... It workes
« on: June 18, 2004, 13:18:34 »
My Wife bought me an Apple i-Pod Mp3 Music player as a birthday present last month. And since then I have been trying to figure out a way to use it with the Becker Europa II stereo radio in my 280SL , which is nearing the completion of its body Off restoration.

I THINK I DID IT !!

A local radio specialist was able to use an auxiliary in the radio and gave me a line out from the Europa II (Two jacks like the back of a home amplifier) that I could plug the I-pod line out into. The radio goes quiet when I start the i-pod, and on again when I put the i-pod off.

Then I used an Apple car charger, that goes into a cigarette Lighter, which I installed behind the dash out of sight and connected them to an Apple i-Dock.

I had a local wood artisan make an enclosure for the dock in the same wood as the center cluster with a slit in the wood 4x2cm, where the i-pod could be placed (See Attached Photos)

I Also connected the Europa amplifier into a Sony 4 way amplifier placed under the wood panel behind the seat, which gave me 500 watts for four speakers, two in the front in their original place, and two in the back.

I did all the wiring today and tested the system, [and behold it works fantastically!

Now I can keep the original look of the dash, and have up to 10,000 songs in my SL!

Attached are the photos with i-pod in, i-pod out and a schematic of the connections.

I've done the same thing with my Grand Prix.

Cable comes down the transmission tunnel and pops up by a seat belt connector

Plug in my Palm (with Aeroplayer) and hit the seek button on the GP and lo..... MP3 meets Becker Grand Prix

Following on this subject, I have installed Two speakers in the wood behind the seats with "chicken wire' to re-enforce the hole and glued the carpet back on top, so the sound goes through it, which gives alot of bass so i added two small Tweeters 2cmx2cm (removable) to get a better sound, and also installed two speakers in their original place in the side panels in the front (photos attached)
...and the sound is great

A little off subject here but I couldn't help notice the air conditioning system. Did you recover it in blue or was it dyed? It looks good.

The air condition was recovered with the same leather as the interior
