Will be taking out engine to replace seals, clean and paint.....saw no "loops" attached to engine....should I assume a "belly strap" looped under engine and attached to a hoist is the way to go?  4 speed manual trans. also needs seals, should  I pull it attached to engine or disconect first and drop it from the bottom?

I put straps around the arms for the motor mounts and hold them in place with the screws for the mounts. The last thing you want is for the enginer to slip and land on the car or someone working on the car. I generally put the engine with the trans attached.

If lifting from that low be careful to prevent the whole thing turning over.
