Ragg Top Cleaner & Protectant
« on: June 24, 2004, 09:55:59 »
Any one use this product?  My top is 14 years old and does not bead water; just gets wet. Also; has fold stains from storage units or dust.

This product is made by Haartz which supposedly makes all convertible tops; thought mine was made by Happich of Germany?

Was wondering if this cleaner and protectant are needed? Hate spraying chemicals on a top.

I used both once, since the top is normally folded away.  Not sure the cleaner is all that special, but I think the protectant is nice.  Just spray it on and let it soak in.  The top (probably original judging by appearance and condition) looked nicer afterwards, and water beaded up on it.  Periodic retreating of the top is recommended, and I think it was worth it.

K.
As an auto Appearance specialist and an owner of a classic 280SL. I am very fussy about what I use to clean and condition our family cars as well as my cleints automobiles. I worked with Rick Goldstein from ragg Topp when this product was introduced and he was very concerned about feed back from me and other perfessionals to make sure his product would do no harm to the Europena Canvas tops.
I can truly say I endorse this product as has Haart the maker of canvas tops and awning. The important think to remember is that this product is a polymer and is cured by heat. Cross application of this product in a lite spray pattern followed by low heat from a hair dryer or heat gun at 10 to 12 feet distance from top will help cure the product faster. Total curing time is 24 hours.  A good precleaning which envolves a horse hair brush and a vacumn cleaner to remove any loose soil is recommended. Do not use harsh chemicals to clean the canvas as this can have an effect on the stiching . Ragg Topp makes a spray on cleaner that can be brushed in and washed off than chammy dry the converible top let it dry and apply their protectant.
A highly effective product to protect and seal you expensive investment indeed.

On the recommendation of Bob Geco, I purchased these products last year. The first time I used the cleaner there was an incredible amount of dirt (= *black* water) that came off (using the stiff brush that the company also sells). After this cleaning the top (dark blue, good shape) came out looking like new. The protectant (two coats) made the top bead water very nicely, it would basically just run right off.
I decided to clean the top again with the cleaner last weekend, and this necessitates re-applying the protectant.
I had previously used a protectant that was recommended to me by the local MB dealer (they still sell plenty of modern convertibles, so I figured they should know) but the effect of that was nothing compared to Ragg Top.

G'day all

I recently 'reimpregnated' my soft top (as the owner's manual describes it). I couldn't get hold of Ragg Topp here in Australia so I went for a product that is used to waterproof canvas sails. The top came up looking good and beads nicely when it gets wet but it still has a chemical smell after four months. I think I'll order some Ragg Topp in the US and have it sent over next time.

No I don't think so Per. I ordered it through the web from a US supplier, and unfortunately ended up paying import duties on it which is a hassle as well as an expense due to the forms to be filled out etc. I ordered two bottles each of the protectant and the cleaner, plus a brush, so the total value perhaps triggered the customs procedure.

Maybe someone else knows of a European supplier somewhere? Maybe we can interest a European importer to start carrying the product for us Europeans.

If you do a search on Google using "Ragg top protectant" you get for example:

I think that's the company I got my fix from!

The company that makes the 303 rubber/vinyl treatment (no silicone) also offers a canvas water proof product that I like.  You can find it at most marine/boating stores, including West Marine in the US.

I put the product in a metal spray can that I have that allows me to add compressed air from my compressor.  This creates a very fine spray that covers the top nicely.  It can be used right out of the spray bottle that it comes in, but you want to avoid soaking the top with the product-it is intended to be applied more as a mist.

When water hits the top after treatment, it beads nicely, almost like the paint finish of a well waxed car.

Best,

Tom

Even better link to the Ragg Top product line - the manufacturer, I checked the package this morning for the website address. Also some online retailers that could ship worldwide:

I used 303 on the canvas top of my Ferrari Mondial, which had leaked like a sieve, and it worked fine. The top does need to be clean when you put it on, otherwise you will bind in the dirt which is on when you apply it. 303 also make a cleaner. I think 303s are the recommended products for Sunbrella acrylic canvas; virtually all the boat canvas I have ever seen is made of Sunbrella fabric and lots of other things besides. If car tops are washed with only plain water, the waterproofing holds up much longer, which is interesting. These tops are supposedly made with a rubber layer inside under the fabric, so you would think that they would be waterproof regardless of whether they shed water or not, but evidently that is not the case.
I have found that a lot of the products I use to maintain my boat are good on vintage cars and motorcycles as well; waxes and protectants, corrosion inhibitors, and the electrical products used to rewire boats, made by Ancor Inc, are far superior to anything sold on the automotive wiring market. The wire terminals, tinned multistrand wire, fuses, bulbs etc sold by Ancor make auto electrical products look poor by comparison. Their stuff is sold by BoatUS and West Marine- if it can hold together offshore in the salt spray, it will last forever on a car.

For the europeans the message of Wolfsteins:

Dear L.S.,

Thank you, for taking the time to inquire about Ragtop products for cleaning and protecting convertible and SUV tops.  RAGGTOPP products have been tested and endorsed by The Haartz Corporation, the world’s leading manufacturer of convertible topping fabric for virtually every American and European convertible automobile manufactured throughout the world.

At the present time, we are looking to expand to Europe with RAGGTOPP products.  However, we do have an authorized distributor in Germany.

Wow! Just used this product yesterday and was floored by the amount of black stuff that ran out of the top when I hosed it off. What was that??

I think that black stuff was dirt. The same thing happened when I first used the cleaner. The second time, a year later, it was not nearly as dark.
