Negative Battery Cable--Where does it attach?
« on: September 23, 2012, 05:00:06 »
I am just finishing a rebuilding the entire top end of my engine and ran into a dumb problem:  I can't remember where on the body of the car (or the block) to attach the negative battery cable.  Somehow I managed to remember where everything else connects but the negative battery cable has me stymied.  I took the car apart over a year ago so I did pretty well remember where every other hose, wire, and piece goes.  And then when I went to finish up today, and my wife waited for the roar of the newly refreshed engine, I stood dumbly holding the battery cable and could not figure out where to strap it down.  I have a 1971 280SL.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Well we can't have Pagoda owners looking silly in front of their spouses!

On my '69 car, the negative cable attaches to the frame very close to the battery itself, and close to where the hood prop rests in the plastic catch. A picture would do wonders here, but I am a few thousand miles away from the car right now. Maybe someone else can chime in with a picture.

Alp,

It should almost be self-explanatory, because the cable is so short!  On my '69, the "-" cable attaches through a bolt right at the sheet metal seam on what I would call the inner fender.

I replaced the ground battery cable with a longer one and routed it to the ground strap that goes from the engine to the chassis. I don't want all that current running through the chassis.
