Fuel Cap Gasket Thickness: new Cork vs. used Blue Rubber

Someone might find it interesting to know that the thickness of a used blue fuel cap gasket I purchased from a non-MB vendor was approximately 3.0 to 3.1 mm while a new cork gasket from the Classic Center was approximately 2.5 to 2.6 mm.

That extra thickness makes it hard to get on and off...and precisely why you can't remove or replace this insanely expensive gas cap with the blue rubber on it in a cavalier manner.  This has probably caused me to pay great attention to the cap's secure installation after a fill up.

I agree with Michael, hard to get on and off.  I also have the cork seal, and what I have done is put some grease on the seal from time to time and it goes on and off easier.

OK guys.   I've had my car 10 years.   7 of those years, I had a thin cork on the gas cap that made the use very simple.   About three years ago, the cork fell apart.   No problem as first, but over time, it's gotten nearly impossible to screw back on.   

So, I found cork online and the delivery just arrived.

As indicated, the cork is thicker than I recall my last cork being...and I am totally unable to screw this back on.

Is this what it's supposed to look like?   What am I missing?

I have new MB version (from Buds) with cork and it is thinner than yours and it is still very difficult to get on & off

If you smear both sides of the gasket with Vaseline, it eases fitting and removal conciderably.

That looks very wrong to me.
Let me guess, you did NOT buy it at the MB Classisc Center, correct?
Besides the thickness looking too thick, the outer and inner diameters look wrong. Mine fits recessed into the cap and is approximately flush with the metal edge it rests against.
Can you measure the thickness and compare it to my original post in this string?

You probably need to buy one from the MB Classic Center.

Looking closely at your picture (the one with the side view) It appears that you still have a seal under the cork seal.  It needs to be removed so that the new seal will "seat" in the base.

Regarding the cork vs. the blue rubber seal, the Classic Center has both.  Before ordering I had them compare the thickness side by side and the response was "they appear to be exactly the same thickness".
