Fuel Hose Splits..
« on: November 19, 2012, 20:41:15 »
The flexible braided fuel line which joins the solid line from the electric fuel pump and to the inlet of the fuel filter, split sending fuel all over the battery and engine bay.
A passer bye had some corrugated/split tubing that we fitted over the hose and then we wrapped the whole thing in tape.
This diverted the fuel down to the road for the short trip home (3 streets).

As I am going to replace that hose, as a stop gap measure, can I remove the flexible hose from the metal fittings and use normal fuel hose with normal clamps?

Even though the other hoses in that area look to be in good condition, should I replace them given they are all probably 45+years old too?
And when replacing them are the fittings torqued or just a judicious tension?

thanks for any advice

Bob,

I think the answer is yes and yes you should.

I have always replaced all hoses on my old vehicles as a matter of course when I have got them, and have just done it with my Kombi and about to do it with the 230SL before I put it all together again in the next month or so. And that includes the brake hoses that can fail if they are old.

The wicked stench of gasoline after my final ride of the season had me worried.  Long story short, the fuel feed line from the pump to the main fuel supply line at the rear of the car developed a leak at the crimp!  This is the hose that is metal, inverted J shape where it attaches to the fuel pump, and via a crimp, transitions to rubber.  I ordered a new one from Dave Gallon and it arrived in days, ready for when I PUSH the car out of the garage on a warm spring day (I dare not pressurize the pump again until the new line is in) in 2013.

Oh...this leaky fuel line is about 3 years old... >:(

Michael, is the 3 year old line a Mercedes original part or an aftermarket replacement?

I don't remember!  I do know that the NEW replacement I have waiting for installation is an MB part.  Sometimes the aftermarket and OEM are one and the same.  A Bosch starter or alternator in the grey OEM MB box, for example, is the same as the one in the yellow Bosch reman box bought aftermarket.  Many of the small sundry parts are from the same manufacturer.  In this case, I don't remember what I bought.
