Fan hits radiator when on j-stands
« on: July 06, 2004, 05:31:35 »

What's the "meaning" of having the visco-fan hit the radiator tank when the car is on jack stands? The engine and trans mounts appear to be in fine shape, but the front subframe attachment points are more difficult to assess.  Is there a common culprit for this condition?

Thx,

If your jackstands are under the main chassis (not the subframe), it would suggest to me that your subframe mounts are allowing the subframe to droop too much when it's unloaded.  You can see the mounts between the subframe and main chassis with the front wheels off.  You should be able to compare the mounts in the unloaded vs loaded condition by inspecting them first while sitting on jack stands under the main chassis, and then jacking under the subframe until the jack is carrying the weight of the car.

Also depends a bit on how much fan clearance you have normally.  If it's minimal, then a slight droop may be all it takes.

I agree. Sub frame mounts and motor mounts are the most likely problems. When new nothing moves and you can suspend the car without worry - even if they say you shouldn't.

What are signs that the sub frame mounts are in need of replacement?
