I can't tell for sure, but I believe it is the "tone" adjuster for the radio.
It fits under the on/off volume knob on a shaft that has a flat on it.
Is that it?

Don't kow what it is but it gave me a good idea the next time I replace the speaker.  It would make placing the washer and nut under the dash much easier if I had something to grab onto.

Iconic is definitely right.
It's the "tone" adjuster for the radio under the on/off volume knob or for the sensitivity of the autmatic station seeker on the Becker Mexico/Grand Prix.

Original for every model year 1968 + Becker radio.

Ok, lets not get the French upset. The correct spelling is "Voila". ;D

Philippe,

you are right that even the French neglect the little mark above "a". Even more surprisingly, there is a popular french website called volia.fr that does not use the sign above the "a" on the main page and elsewhere.

See for yourself ;)

Robb, although your question was already answered, here is a nice illustration of radio parts that has your item among the others.

Ha! Ha! Ha! I hadn't even realized ! Vawalla is really a good one !

About the accents : French who use a qwerty keyboard often don't bother to use them (my case). The other reason is that French is quite a difficult language to write properly and education level in this regard has gone down quite a bit in recent decades (at similar education level grand-parents write better than their children and much better than their grand-children). Also, recent spreading of texting writing did not improve things.
