air cleaner conundrum
« on: July 08, 2004, 13:31:02 »
Dear Fellow Sufferers:

I'm moving toward the front end of my SL now, starting with the air filter (it seemed such an easy job to begin with). Well, the bottom of the air cleaner housing does not seem to match the top. Keep in mind that this car was in an accident before I bought it, so these parts may not be original despite being more than 20 years old. The problem is that the hold-down clamps on the bottom interfere with clamps on the lid that are in roughly the same spot. I'll, of course, attach a picture which I hope will illustrate what I'm talking about. There doesn't seem to be any way to rotate it.

Are these the right parts? Is this why my 20-year-old filter looks brand new?

John

John,

My 1970 280SL has 2 hold down clamps mounted to the top of the air cleaner.  On the side there is a small 90 degree lip which the clamp makes contact with to secure the top.

Jeff,

Thanks. I'm thinking mine has the wrong bucket.

If that's the case, anyone have a spare they'd like to sell me?

John,

With all the significant work you're doing to your W113, don't you have an MB parts book?   :?:   I would imagine the canister and lid have MB part numbers on them that you could compare to your parts book.

Besides that, I agree that it just doesn't look right!

Rod,

Help me out here. I have a black-covered MB parts book, their #12 808, about 6 x 8 inches. It has nice exploded views of everything and, now that I look at it, it may well be the lid that is the offending part.  Is this the parts book everyone says I should have? My big problem with it is that there are no parts numbers in it that seem to be any help in placing orders, unless maybe I'm ordering from the factory.

Is there another parts catalog that gives the complete MB part number?

Thanks, Jeff. I'll check it against mine when it come back from exhaust install and state inspection, probably Tuesday.

My having the car stuck in the shop reminds me of a high school pal of mine back in Maryland. He was the only non-musclecar car nut in my class (having a Beetle convertible, I was considered just a nut, not a car nut). His first car was a very nice TR4, which to this day is probably responsible for my love of genuine wood dashes. He soon sold the Triumph to restore a 1960 Lotus Elite. This was when the Lotus was maybe six years old! Anyhow, he'd finally gotten it all back together and was having some final tuning done at a local specialist. The guy said he needed to keep it overnight, so we all headed to downtown D.C. for a typical evening of underage drinking. We were making one of our highly-regarded two-wheel spins around Dupont Circle in the VW when what should pass us on the outside but a pale yellow Lotus Elite with a brand new paint job. Even in D.C. there weren't many of these around, especially without any visible cracks in the gel coat. Suffice it to say, my pal got his tune up for free.

Maybe I'll see the SL out and about this weekend!

John,

For my 230 SL I have a "230 SL Spare Parts List" book.  I ordered it through the Classic Center in Germany.  I assume the same thing exists for the 250 SL & 280 SL.  This is paper back and measures about 9 inches tall (along the spine), about 13 inches wide, and 1.5 inches thick.  Very strange size, but it works well for it's purpose.  All parts are shown in exploded view and indexed.  You then page through to find the index number for that part and it shows the MB part number and indicates if the part number was changed and if so, at what chassis number.  It's a great book and everyone who works on their own cars should have one.

For classic literature available from MB-USA, see this site:
http://www.thecollection.mbusa.com/collection/templates/category.jsp;jsessionid=O4F3JU3SR1CIDQFI4JDCM4WAVDZEOJVC?startDisplayIndex=1&ItemsToDisplay=4&id=710

Thanks,
Rodd

thanks, Rodd. I went to the MB site and didn't see the spare parts book for the 280SL, but I may just have overlooked it. I emailed them to see if it can be ordered. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

It appears there is no Spare Parts Catalog for the '63 230Sl 127 engine. THe MBUSA site has the ones for the 129 & 130 engine, but none listed for the 127 engine. Am I missing the correct info. for this?

I have used parts like this.
The 113 uses it's own special air filter canister. Filter is shared with all the other FI cars from that eara.

Daniel,

I' m hoping to get the car out of the shop tomorrow. I'll take the both parts of the cannister out and photograph them.  Right now I'm thinking it's just the top that is wrong, but I'm not certain.

I heard back from the MB USA classic car center re the spare parts book. Alas, the news is not good. Here's what they had to say:

"Spare Part Catalogs are no longer available. Your local Mercedes Benz authorized dealership has access to the MB Electronic Parts Catalog for replacement part
specification.

Regards,

MBUSA
Classic Parts Center"

Maybe one of those jobs I see on CD on ebay is the way to go? I haven't even seen them lately, though.

Naj,

I worked my way through the German web site and finally found the 25 page list of classic service books at
http://www.cms.daimlerchrysler.com/Projects/c2c/channel/files/14625_Technische_Literatur_04_2004.pdf
The W113 parts CD is on page seven (see screen shot attached - actually, I got timed out uploading. I'll try it later.). I find the price of 48 euros, but see nothing about how to order this. Somehow I don't think my local MB dealer is going to be able to do this for me, but I could easily be wrong. Is there somewhere on the web site where you can do an on-line order.

Thanks.

For those situated in the US, I am pretty sure the US Classic Center sells the CD-rom with the owner's manual, parts book and also the BBB (workshop manual).

Cees,

I've been on the US Classic site several times and have emailed them twice. It seems they pretty much just want me to go to the dealer. They did specificially say that the parts book is no longer available. I'll email them the CD part number and see what they say, but they sure haven't been very helpful thus far.

the Cd you want is P-2700-EV4-000. It contains the manuals for the 300SL, 190SL, and the 113s. I have a copy from the Customer Assistance Center at MBUSA (referred by the Classic Center).
