50th anniversary slide show at MB site
« on: March 10, 2013, 01:56:23 »
Not sure whether Photo Gallery is the right place to post it, maybe it should rather belong to Events, but anyway:

Here is a nice short slide show about the 50th Pagoda anniversary.

http://www5.mercedes-benz.com/en/history/50-years-of-the-pagoda-230-sl-premiere-geneva-classic-museum-royce-rumsey/

Two remarks:
1. On the slide number 8 a video is announced to be posted on March 11, so let's watch out!
2. The slide 6 shows a Pagoda with the same color on body and HT, however the hubcaps are black. Interesting as this car seems to be used in official MB shots for the celebration

Thanks for sharing Stan, very nice slide show. Does anyone else have their exterior rear view mirror set up like that in slide #4?

Interestingly, it indicates that Paul Bracq designed the roof, but that Friedrich Geiger designed the vehicle (Slide 3). Now that's a name I hadn't heard yet...

And also great, that on page 07 of 10 they list the 50th celebration that we are hosting together with the German SL Club Pagode. As Achim can confirm, it was our group that initiated the idea... but we'll let them take the credit, as they need to do most of the "heavy lifting".

Well, designing a car is a team effort. Friedrich Geiger was head of the design department, and Paul Bracq was among his staff.
The Project manager for the W113 was the powerful character Karl Wilfert. He was the one making the final decisions regarding proposed designs. Major decisions regarding funding, production start etc. were up in the board, of course

The subject was up for discussion on this Forum some years back, see for instance:  http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=6181.0

Peter,
the main reason is that he was a somewhat shy person who avoided the limelight but enjoyed it when team efforts, as Hans mentioned, succeeded.
Nevertheless he should have received every conceivable design award out there.  You may not have heard of Geiger but I am sure you have heard of the pre-war 500K special roadster.  Well, he designed that as a 27-year old and then became really famous for his styling of the 300SL Gullwing.
His grill design with the three-pointed star in the center has been the common style element for all SL cars since his 300SL came out.
Attached is his biography that Daimler released last year,
and a photo of the 500K that I shot in the Mercedes museum. The b&w is a press release photo which shows the car's fluid lines very well.

Well spotted... if you click on slide 9 on the Go to Image Gallery, you get another 10 shots including a very bright red Pagoda... I was trying to create a direct link to that, but clearly failed...

Also, if you go to the last page on that slide show there are two other slide shows accessible. Although they present the entire SL line history, our Pagoda is well represented on some pictures in each of the two slide shows

There is a beautiful 181H beige after the red one. Looks like mine except it has brown interior where mine is cognac. Beautiful cars!

Stan, on my computer the beautiful car in Slide 6 looks to have body-colored hubcaps and wheels. May just be the shading makes them look darker.  In any case, a gorgeous car. Anyone know what color that is?
