Wiring Questions
« on: July 12, 2004, 07:51:16 »
I just rebuilt my multi-function switch (turn signal stalk) thanks to the great posts on this site. My advice is to make sketches as you take it apart or take photos. I relied on my memory and had to take it apart again because I put the little copper contact in backwards.

In doing this project, I found a need for a wiring harness diagram. I wanted to validate what wire went where. The diagrams in the back of the BBB seem to say "excludes 280/SL 8". Bummer. Where does one find the wiring harness diagrams for the 280s?

Well, now my directional signals work, albeit a bit sluggish. I'm wondering if I need a new relay. They behave like they're "tired". Also, the wipers do not work. They didn't before, but now that I've gotten the switch repaired, I want to debug this problem. Any suggestions on where to start or simple tests? I assume there's a relay in there somewhere. I have to dive into the wiring diagram.

Thanks for the coaching. This site has encouraged me to dive into projects saving lots of money and getting me more acquainted with my car.

Shawn,

An uninspired guess, but the "speed" of a directional indicator is often related to the resistance and or load in the circuit.  That's why if you have a bulb out, often times the flasher seems to go in warp speed.

It wouldn't hurt to check all your contacts for cleanliness to ensure you are not introducing any unneeded resistance, and or to ensure you have the correct bulb wattages and have not reversed anything.

Shawn - Achim Ahlert has made a wiring diagram for the 280 SL with color codes (he told me that these do not exist elsewhere, although I believe there are diagrams in the Haynes manual that have some color codes). I have a copy that I could make a photocopy of and mail to you if you'd like. Not sure this will solve all your problems but it may help. Email me your address offline please.
