Trying to figure out a connector
« on: April 21, 2013, 14:59:25 »
Good day everyone.

We are still working on the electrical in our 3.5 conversion car.  We are using the US 280SL wiring harness and have made it on to the radio, door switches, and courtesy light.  I have two issues, one of which is a mysterious connector that needs something to power the other leg of the courtesy light.  The lines split off the wiring harness near the main split by the firewall passage.  The plug is a four F contact plug with green/white, green/red, red/green, and a red/black/yellow.  I was thinking it could be a warning buzzer connecter but it is two too many contacts.  It is connected to the single fuse line on the passenger side of the car (also missing from the original wiring diagram).  The plug is a positive bridge to the courtesy light so it definitely needs populated.

The second issue is the power line to the radio.  Does anyone know the color of the wire and where it should be sourced from?  According to the wiring diagram, the power comes off the "R" on the ignition switch.  I would have expected a single line for power off the modular connector but don't see anything.

As always, thanks for the help and advice.
Justin

Justin,
check whether you have the red or red/green wire for the radio tugged inside the harness as shown here:

The mystery of the four contact connector has gotten partially solved.  The connector goes to the driver side door entry switch.  We had the wrong connector on the switch.  What came out is still an unknown.  It's a two prong red/black and brown/black.  Also on this connector harness are three separate wires with ring terminals - brown/white, brown/black, and black/red.  There is also a rubber grommet that looks like it should go into the firewall.

The radio line in the passenger-side engine loom is connected on a fuse box.  Still looking for the wire on the interior loom.

Wiring mess now nicely resolved.  The wire I was looking for is the return wire from the drop where the fuse goes.  No wire returns back through the loom so I ran a new wire back through the firewall for the radio and viola - we have tunes.  I probably should run a second line in case we get so bold as to install a power antenna.

Thanks for the help folks!
