clunk when shifting into second gear
« on: July 16, 2004, 17:27:14 »
I recently bought a 1969 280SL 4 speed manual trans and I am IN LOVE with this car.......I have noticed a "clunk" when I am shifting into second gear although the transmission feels quite solid.....anyone ever experience this before?  Also what type of oil should I use (10-40?) the engine was rebuilt within the last 10K miles

Your problem is worn synchro rings from gears 1->2. The synchros are designed to match the tranny shaft speeds (input/output) before the actual gears engage, this keeps things quiet. To repair this the transmission must be pulled apart and syncro ring(s) replaced. Not a small job, and might as well use a new clutch during re-installation.

Mike...I think your right in reference to the synchro ring being the problems.....seem logical based on what is happening when I let the clutch out .......so here is the question.......anyone have a ballpark $$$ amount on how much it is going to cost to get the synchro rings repaired / replaced and a new clutch?  That ain't something I can do myself....

Dan call Pacific Motors and talk with Harry Hayashi. He is very knowledgeable when it comes to the W113. He's somewhere near San Francisco. 415-861-1013 This would be a great contact on the west coast.
