Trunk seal help please

It is often reported in this forum that 7 out of every 10 cars have the trunk seal incorrectly fitted, and my car was no exception.  Mine is upside down, which traps water and leads to corrosion.  See picture.
I have never seen one properly installed so hoping for some help.

I believe it should be installed with the vertical edge glued to the trunk or inner edge of the channel with the top or “flap” facing outwards. Is this correct? 
How far down into the channel should it be installed?
There is a  distinct ridge on the inner edge of the seal, as can be seen in the picture.  Is this a guide for correct to installation?

see attached photo, I think this orientation is correct - the vertical edge of the seal is on the inner edge of the channel, as you said, but the longer edge of the seal sits in the base of channel and the shorter edge at the top.

I checked mine and it's the opposite of yours.  I just went and looked because I got caught in a frog choker a couple of days ago and was really impressed at how little the old girl leaked.  I hadn't thought to check the trunk as there is lots of papers in there including service manuals.  Anyway it didn't appear to leak a drop in that monsoon so I guess the system works.

Very true Dave, but all this sun, sand and beach lifestyle does mean that we need to keep the Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc icy cold and the truck seal does help.

Mike, our long term average rainfall is 850 mm - nearly 15% more than Novi, MI! Though we seem to be drying out.

I am hoping you get lots of sun for the next month or two, I am driving my Kombi from Darwin to Perth and beyond in Mid June till end of July.
Working hard on it now to make sure its height is not any greater than 1.94m to fit on the train and through all the tunnels between Perth and Adelaide on the way home
