Oil leaking from front left of engine bay
« on: May 29, 2013, 12:02:52 »
A question from a technophobe ...

I have just returned from a 1,000km round trip to Germany from the UK. Everything went well, but on my return I see that I have a fairly significant oil leak - but I can't see quite where it is coming from. It is dripping onto the floor somewhat inboard of the front left wheel; there are some oil marks on the inside of the bonnet, but these could be caused by "splatter" from the cooling fan. There is significant oil on the thick cable that goes from the battery, down and around the front of the oil sump.

The leaked fluid is oily in texture. All reservoirs that I can see (engine oil, power steering, brakes) are within limits. Engine oil is about midway between the markers on the dipstick.

Any suggestions as to what I might check?

TIA

Julian

Is it a LHD or RHD?
You need to determine if it is ATF or motor oil.
That would help in further problem search.

Sounds like you need to  clean everything up and watch for new leakage.

Sorry, it is right hand drive, with a manual gearbox.

I will clean the leaks away and investigate further!

There's a bolt that holds the PAS pump bracket to the left side if the block. the hole for this bolt goes directly in to the timing chain tunnel and so needs to be sealed. Check there.

Thanks all; it turned out to be ATF leaking from a split rubber hose that goes between the PAS reservoir & the PAS pump. Comparatively easy (and cheap) to fix. Feeling chuffed  :)
