Mercedes World current W113 display.
« on: June 20, 2013, 07:53:45 »

I visited Mercedes World in Weybridge on Tuesday, for my annual indulgence of thrashing about the rack track in a high-speed Mercedes for an hour. A wonderful place for any Mercedes enthusiast about 30 minutes out of London by train.  They currently have two W113’s on display.  An immaculate 280SL (photo attached) and a rather scruffy 230SL (not worth a photo) both of which attract a lot of attention from visitors. The old still have class.
For those genuinely interested, the Curator (Richard I believe his name was)  is most charming, very knowledgeable and even prepared to open up some of these cars so you on check finishing details etc.  Lovely people and great outing for the whole family.

On this particular trip I gifted myself an “SLS Experience” which is a chance to do ridiculously illegal speeds in a brand new 700hp SLS supercar on a closed race track. To ensure you are not going to kill yourself, spectators or the car, they test you first in the new SL AMG, the current iteration of our W113, then if you can handle the power and the speed, you swap over to the amazing gull-winged SLS.  Fabulous fun, so if you get the chance, give yourself a treat.

While in London I also called in one of UK’s larger Classic Car dealers to see what W113’s they had on offer. They had 3 ranging between  £35-55,000  but I was amazed just how scruffy and tired these vehicles seemed for the money.  Makes mine look mint in comparison.

Jeff,
I have no single doubt that your experience was top notch, however I hope that this was not the only reason for your trip from "down under"  :D
Just one detail: the Pagoda looks really great, but I was surprised to see the two-piece hub caps on a 280 model ???

I actually think it is the 230,  not only the wheels of a 230 but also the steering wheel and centre steering hub of a 230.  Maybe it was the other way round,  A good 230SL and not so good 280SL.

Garry,
what an eye! It seems that the trip does not affect the acuity of your view, and who knows maybe even improves it :) I am truly and positively impressed  :D

Jeff, you should have popped in to see me, i'm far more interesting than the men in suits at Brokklands!
The classics they have on show there are loaned to them by private individuals who seem to think that there's some cudos to be had but these temporary custodians don't actually know the first thing about these cars.
I had a 230Sl come to me direct from Brooklands a few years ago where they had failed to spot an engine that was trying to climb out of the engine bay due to the fact that it had mis-matched crank and counter-weighted flywheel.

Jeff, Great photos, I'm sure you had a great trip and fun at the track. Perhaps next time you should stop by Chelsea Cars London United Kingdom Jeremy C. of TopGear talked about cars of the 50s and 60s including our Pagoda the video clip that can be found on the net from 2002 is quite entertaining :)

From various places - albeit internet (warriors?) rather than in person - the reputation of the place in Wandsworth is  it's not the sort of place one buys a second classic car.
