Doug,
One of the best photos of our cars that I have seen.  The color interplay between the grey stone and body color with the woodpile and interior color is striking.  Flowers add an additional splash of color.  Remarkable.
Best,
Tom

It is a beautiful shot. Well balanced with all the different elements. The color almost resembles my car.
I took a look around the website that the car is featured. This car  is a 280sl. Did the early 280sl have the older style mirrors?

Doug I have gone back to the pics of this car and downloaded them.  I have compared with mine. Seller states as beige in color. Mine is beige-grey. Metalics have a way of "changing colors" with diff light situations. Amazing how similar and not so.  In addition to the gooseneck mirrors I noticed the rearview should have been the older style chrome but it is not.

Actually, the car has the correct mirror on the windshield. A 1969 280SL should have the black mirror.
Also, you are correct about the mirror on the door. The mirror installed on the door of this car is actually for a 230SL or early 250SL.
Nonetheless, the car is gorgeous.

One of the most stunning photographs of a Pagoda I have seen and what a great colour combination. Any idea what they are asking for this particular vehicle?

Doug here's the pic of my car before white walls and with the painted hubcaps. By the way, my new hubs will be painted soon. 8)

Can anyone see any of the spotwelds on the inner wings (sorry fenders!)? or is it just my computer screen.

The fenders appear to be replaced as the spotwelds aren't evident.
Mind you, you can put the spot welds into a replacement fender easily enough. Most shops just don't think to.
I rcently saw an SL that had the spotwelds and notches by the headlights, but the fenders had been replaced nicely. The car was most likely in a front end collision at some point. The telltale signs: A replacement hood and no factory undercoating inside the fenders.

I have been thinking about getting another '69 280sl and a few weeks ago I spoke to a restoration shop owner.  He can duplicate the weld spots on the fenders and also claims he can put the numbers on the top right corner of the hood.  Claims when finished it would be a 100 point car.  People can claim anything they want but he did sell one of his creations for $75,000.00 about a year ago.

Hello alltogether,
One thing you can often find on (pretty) well restored cars is that the ridges on the inner side of the head lights are too long or not correctly horizontal. This is also the case on this grey metallic car on the Mirbach's home page.
The ridge is correct if it is little less than an inch long (about 2 cm) as on Doug's 018260. Sorry, I can't find a good pic now. Maybe later tonight.

This "100 point" thing that restorers talk about is a bunch of hogwash in relation to Mercedes cars.  First of all, unless the car is judged by MBCA standards, there could literally be a thousand things not right with the car, but it can be made to look perfect.  If it is judged by MBCA standards, their scale is 470 points.  You get 50% of the points for just showing up.  So a 100 point 113 is a car missing a good deal of its parts :D

When did they change the location of the ID plate from the firewall to the door post?  This 1969 model has the ID plate on the firewall.  I had a 1968 280SL with the ID plate on the door post
