Replacing trim pieces at top of windscreen

One of the drawbacks of a hand built car I suppose.  I am replacing the two upholstered trim pieces at the top edge of the windscreen.  The old ones became damaged during a one-man hardtop fitting incident.  At any rate the pieces I bought fit in the space just fine and line up perfectly with the top lock receivers.  However, the holes for the screws that anchor the visor clips don't match up with the existing holes in the windscreen frame and on the passenger side one of the two screws to hold the visor in place also doesn't line up.  I have tried drilling new holes for the clip screws but haven't been successful yet.  I don't want to make the holes any bigger in fear that the screws won't bite but so far I can't get them tightened down enough to hold the clip firmly in place.  Any ideas for the proper way to make new holes in both locations?  Thanks

it would help if you tell us which model you have. {why not put it in your signature field?}.
The visor holders for 230SL and 280SL are different.

Mine were damaged and I repaired them by simply recovering the old ones with new MB Tex.  If you have leather that should work also.  I guess it depends on just how damaged they were, but I would think an upholstery shop could repair the old ones.  A good shop can work wonders.

I am not sure which one of the padded trim pieces give you trouble, the larger ones in the center, or the ones on the corners?
Also what do you want to drill? The trim pieces to fit the hole in the windshield frame or drill new holes in the frame to fit the holes in the pads?
Also, are you sure you got the correct pads for a 280SL and not the ones for a 230SL?
