Replacement Engine Tag
« on: July 14, 2013, 21:00:11 »
I recently purchased a two owner 1969 280 which has spent most of the past 25 years laid up in a garage.
Due to this there is very little detail with regard to the history of the car.

The guy I bought her from said that when he purchased her in the 80s the owner claimed a new engine had been fitted and the speedo reset to zero.
There is a small metal tag in the engine bay which has the new engine number on it but is there any way I can get some kind of confirmation of this for my records?
I know it was probably between 25-30 years ago but from what I understand MB are very efficient with records etc.

I have attached a photo of the tag and also a couple of the car.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Interesting,

My 250 SL does not have an engine number on the block, which apparently is normal for a replacement engine,

the original engine number from the data card  was   129 982 22 000914,  but the Registration
documents have shown a number with one less digit  129 982 22 00096  for at least the last 40 years.

I notice both your replacement engine numbers also have less digits.

Enjoy the sun, hope it remains for the European trip.

Without copies of the invoice for the engine change then you've got little chance.
The good news is that here in the UK very few people care if it has the original engine or not.
