Longest Road trip you ever made? Did you break a record?
« on: October 15, 2013, 00:27:48 »
What was the longest road trip you ever made to attend a Pagoda Car Show or otherwise any road trip with your Pagoda? ... does it come close to Frank's trip

New Brunswick Canada to Toronto then London Ontario, on to Detroit, MI then down to Williamsburg, VA for the P-50
I don't know his return trip, however, I estimate he put some 4,000 miles on his 1968  Pagoda ...

Find his car here Photo # 14 ---> http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=19342.0

EDIT To All Happy Travellers

Mine was 1,612 Miles ... to Williamsburg, VA. (Via Detroit. MI, then via Charleston and the return trip to London, ON via Niagara Falls).

Should be a fun thread ... come now share your longest trip add a map if you can.

EDIT … for my longest ever see Reply 5 below.

Is it limited to trips in order to attend Pagoda Car shows? If not I drove from DC to Yellow Stone and back last July, with a lot of driving around visiting parks at each stop. That was about 5000 miles in total.

I'm  :o that no one else has taken long road trips  ??? … Your story does not absolutely have to be with your Pagoda, it can be with any other car in your Dream Garage.

Mine was in 1997 when my daughter decided to get married on the east coast of Canada where she did her studies at the time. So I traveled (alone my wife hates cars she took the plane) from Edmonton, Alberta Canada to the east coast then down south then west to California up Highway 101 and 1 then heading back to my home in Alberta Canada … total millage was 15,250 KM (9,476 Miles) in excess of 200 hours driving time in my then 1987 red AMG my friend called her "Pimp Mobile" LOL Below is a picture from my office wall of my Edmonton Garage the next photo is a stop in Niagara Falls on the way to the east coast and the last one is a route map as close to what Google Maps allowed me to recreate it.

So hoping others like to share there longest trip ever taken I am bumping up this post.

Well, when I came to live in the US the first thing I did was to buy a W111 Coupe. Next thing was to visit the US, so I embarked into a coast tot coast round trip in the summer of 2009 that took me from DC to the Pacific Ocean and back, visiting many wonderful places in between. This was a longer trip than the one I did last summer with the Pagoda. Below are some pictures:

I drove 8500 kilometers from Toronto to Seattle and back again in 5 days alone in a truck with a car trailer going to pick up a Pagoda 14 years ago. I believe the reason I was able to accomplish this is that the seller misrepresented the car so badly, I was furious and drove the next 2 days none stop. >:(

I drove my 67 250SL and my wife-to-be from Mountain View California to Omaha Nebraska and back via I80, 2100 miles.  That was in 1975 and I still have both ladies.  The Sl would do it again, I don't think my wife would.  That's the longest in the SL.

So, does planned trips count?

The longest one way trip so far is when I bought my car in 1993 and drove it home from Greensboro NC. I'm not sure how far that is but it took two full days to get back home.

Dan, that would have been 1,104 KM when you picked up your red rocket. I think your round trip to Williamsburg, Virginia including the detour we made was a bit longer. I think you have the milage for that one I estimate it would have been some 1500 Miles give or take 50 miles :)

As for planned trips … well you can always report back here once you did take that planned trip :)

I take it you added on our little detour though Ohio to come up with that figure?   :)

Sure did Dan, as I mentioned in my post 15 above. If I recall you took record of the fuel and mileage, so you should have the exact figure.

I can't attempt to beat the record for the longest trip, but maybe of interest here.
In 1973 and 1974 I made two crossings of the Nullabor about 2000 miles from Melbourne, Victoria to Perth, Western Australia in my 230sl.
In those days there was about 800 miles of gravel road between iron Knob in South Australia to about 100 miles East of Norsman, W.A.
The road conditions varied considerably as the photos show, in dry conditions there were "bulldust" holes two foot deep which turned to slippery water holes when it rained.
One photo shows us parked beside an emergency water catchment and tanks.
I actually did this trip 3 times between Melbourne and Perth, the first however I put the car on the Indian-Pacific train as i didn't want to put the little 230 through the trauma.
One crossing (the last in the 230) I hit a kangaroo, or rather it hit me in the drivers door at Baladonia, so I had to drive about another 400 miles with the door held shut with some rope.
I sold the car in Perth, I have previously put a request on this forum to see of anyone knows who has it these days.

aussiebattler,

That second photo with the windshield wiper pattern is a gem ... a production designer could not get the set to look that great.  that photo deserves to be archived.

thanks for posting it.

I'm afraid I didn't treat the 230sl as one would today.
I'm happy for the photo to be used in any archive, it was take in 1974 somewhere on the Nullabor Plane, Western Australia.

Great stories and photos so far everyone … do keep them coming :)

Along route 66 in 2010 the largest Item I came across was this rocking chair …. after traveling north along route 101 and the coastal highway 1 I could not resist to make a small detour to also visit Mount Rushmore (last photo one of many I took). Yes … you might hate the look of that Z4 I drove at the time, no worries I plan to repeat the trip in my Pagoda next year :)

In 1994, I did the New England 1000 in my 230SL. It was about 500km to the start line, 1000km in the rally, and 500km home again.

Entry rule for the rally (then) was a sports car 1965 or older. Even allowing for the fact that the Pagoda was one of the newer cars, it was plainly far ahead of its time in its overall combination of comfort, style and performance. We finished second in class, 6th overall. Several Ferrari drivers commented how tough it was to keep up with the SL on twisty mountain roads.

I highly recommend the event!
