Lowest Mileage 280SL...

The editor of the MBCA Star magazine (where I'm a contributing editor) received a snail-pail inquiry, along with a post paid return postcard.  The brief note was this:

"Hello. My name is [redacted]. Just out of curiosity, what is the lowest mileage on a 280SL that you are aware of. If you have any information, I have enclosed a self-addressed post card."

Anyone aware of particularly low mileage 280SLs?

I suspect that there may be a lower mileage example out there, but I'll start out the conversation by saying that my former employer's Signal Red '69 4sp manual 280SL had only about 22K mikes on the clock when he shipped it to its new owner in Switzerland about four years or so ago.  Having known this car since 1980 and even driven it a few times prior to acquiring my own Pagoda, I was there to say goodbye when it was loaded into the enclosed transporter for the first leg of the journey.

Brian Peters of Motoring Investments lists several sold cars on his site that had mileage under 40,000.

Mike:  I received the same post card, I called the sender and he has a 1971 with 33,000 miles. Tobacco brown automatic and cognac MB Tex.  I just think he is curious.  But if anyone can send me  any information n anything less than 20K miles, I will contact

He doesn't live far form here, so I may take a few photos when it is convenient  for both of us.

I have found people with ultra low milage cars just collect them and hardly ever drive them.

Hatch & Sons' web site shows two low-mileage 1971 280SLs that they recently sold, one with 24,600 miles and one with 18,200 miles.

Three years ago I met a former Mercedes dealer from the Detroit area that had just purchased a 1971 280SL from Ford Motor Company. This was the same car the dealer sold them new and never thought anymore about it until someone informed him about a Mercedes 280SL he saw when at Ford on business. When the former dealer inquired with his contacts it turned out this was the same 280SL he sold to them in 1971 and after some negotiating was able to purchase the car back from Ford. I never asked the price that he paid but the car has less than 5000 miles and was in like new condition. The dealer stated that he though the car was purchased by Ford to strip and reverse engineer but this never occurred. I must say that I have never seen the car and plan to find his number to see if I can fill a memory card with pictures.

Is that documented milage with annual service records and all original equipment that would match at that figure. Or is that is what is on the Speedo given that they only go to 99,999 before starting again and again and again!!

It would be most collectable if it is and in need of careful preservation at that low milage.

It's documented down to the penny,every part that was added, every gallon of gas, quart of oil and everything else!

Louhenery may have the cigar for the 280SL lowest milage if there are no other takers. Walt looks like he has a very low 250SL as well.
