Battery Tray pics please
« on: October 18, 2013, 13:37:21 »
My battery tray is incorrect and, frankly, and bit of a mess.

I have bought a new MB tray, but before I shell out the 80 odd euros on the full hold-down bracket, etc, could someone please post or email a picture of a correct 230 (LHD) battery tray in position? I have no idea what it should look like and having spent a good while using the serach function, can't find a picture of it.

So, if anyone has their batter out and have a correct car, I'd be grateful for a few pics.

Many thanks,

James

Hi, Kevin,

Sadly, not. I have the parts, I just can't see how I get from the setup I have at the moment to the point where I can properly fit/employ the parts shown in your post, which are the parts I have.

So I need a pic of someone's car's battery compartment, but without the battery in place.

But thanks.

James,

I have my engine out at the moment so can take some detailed pictures of my battery tray/brackets tomorrow (Saturday) for you (early unmolested 250SL RHD).

Thanks.

But... my thread title clearly sucks. What I need is pics of the battery tray in situ. I have a battery tray, but don't know what it's supposed to look like and where it's supposed to sit, and what secures it, to what, and where.

Hi James,
here are two pics that I have from my restorations, hope is that one might be useful.
I believe that there is no difference between 230SL and 280SL locations/attachments.
Cheers!

I think Alfred's right, all models have the same battery mount, LHD & RHD too.
So there should only be one way it can attach. It's secured by two bolts at the rear, one machine screw & nut at the front, one machine screw & nut on the left.

Thank you all very much. But I am now completely confused.

My tray is definitely not correct. It's a real bodge-job. However, I've looked on the SLS site and on the EPC (which, I fully admit, I'm not very good at using) and the only parts I can see are those shown here in this picture, which is basically a battery tray, and a hold-down clamp thing. Can anyone point me in the direction of the battery frame that is show in most of the pictures posted here and which holds the battery in place? That's what I need. I guess then that the tray shown in the SLS picture (PN 60) fits into that, and that the (ridiculously expensive) rectangular metal hold-down frame (PN 58) clamps onto via the use of 2 threaded rods, (PN 56).

 ??? ???

Hi James. I think the link from 450SL above shows the part clearly...65 Euros not that bad. Once that is mounted, then yes the small insert would make the "floor" and the bracket holds battery down with two long j bolts. I bought a reproduction bracket from SLS (or maybe Miller's? it was much less than MB version).

James,
for whatever reasons Mercedes is quite idiosyncratic when it comes to putting parts into groups. You think that the tray frame for the battery would be listed under battery electricals together with the tie-down hooks and top frame, noooo - that would be way to easy!
The tray is in Group 62 together with the front chassis parts. The p/n is 113 620 00 58. Niemoeller shows a tray (for 65 Euro) , same as the one in the 450SL link: http://www.niemoeller.de/w113/B042-622-D-62-291-batterieauflage-an-radeinbau-l-.html
Call them to make sure you get the correct one.

HI, Alfred,

Hope you're well. Confused is a perfectly normal state for me. Thanks for your pointers. I've now found the thing.

Today's challenge has been sorting the parts for the exhaust manifold, and these damn washers. Anyway, managed to sort that today after a really useful chat with a very experienced German gentlemen who's worked on Pagodas for a lifetime. A true blackbelt. He cleared that up for me. I'll get around to the battery tray next. Just need to stop buying the wrong parts. MB won't take them back and refund here in Germany, so I'm slowly building up a collection of bits I'll never use ::)

James,

It was certainly my fault for looking quickly at the SLS layout and sending the link to the wrong page. Its shown here on their site..

By the way, what is MB not taking back? I believe that their Classic Center in California accepts returns.

I'm finally getting to this job. I now have the correct parts on order but there's a new problem. Thanks to Charles' pictures I can see that part of the problem is that I am missing the small, angular bracket that is welded (I think it's welded) to the inner wing/fender. This is the bracket which supports the short edge of the battery frame and which has a hole in it to which the battery frame is bolted.

I need the angular bracket, but I doubt anyone has one. So what I'd be really grateful for are the dimensions so I can fabricate one. Can anyone help? I suppose a decent photo of that bracket perhaps with a ruler beside it would help.

Thanks.

Hi guys, while we are talking about battery trays can anyone tell me what color they were painted in the factory.  Its either going to be satin black or the same color as the body I think.  Cheers Andy.

Satin black, yes
Note also, that everything you see from the front, through the chrome grille, should be matt black, especially the vertical metal plate in front of the battery. These areas were actually hand brush painted by workers at the M-B factory

Just slightly off topic, but to see what Hans is typing about regarding the black out around the grill. Take a look at the photos in Pagoda Notes, Volume 4 No 1. It has some pictures from an original owner 250 SL (signal red), showing the brushed in black paint around the grill areas and battery.

Thanks guys.  I guessed correctly about the battery tray.   Mine is already satin black.  I did know about the hand painting out front.  Motoring investments also have some great photos.

Hi, Naj,

Yep, that's the badger. 2 questions: how long do you reckon it is, and assuming that is original (judging by the state of the car it is) what might the purpose of the cut corner be, do you think?

I'll have to make one and find someone overhead to weld it on. Might as well get the dimensions correct.

Thanks,

Jamie
