Skid Plates

A friend just gave me the 3 W113 skid plates he had removed from his 280SL... the engine, trans, and fuel tank skid plates, plus all (well, most...) of the attaching hardware.  It's a rare option, but is this worth putting on the car?  Seems like a lot of extra weight.  I don't drive rough terrain, that's for sure!

What's the best thing to do with these?

I think they are quite rare, but probably only worth something to folk who rally the cars, and even then modern techniques will be able to produce in all probability something lighter and better. I know of a member here who's car was built for export to Kenya and his car was fitted with them. He removed them, of course.

Now those are a cool option if you want extra protection.   

I may be interested in purchasing those from you.   At the least I would be interested in more pictures including the hardware and attaching points so I could make a set of my own.

You could always clean them up and hang them on your garage wall to impress your friends.

Yes, except tha having hefted the things, they are heavy indeed. My thinking is that if someone can afford to properly rally a Pagoda, weight will be less critical than money, in which case carbon kevlar underside protection would be a far better option all round.

Nothing will offer the protection that these plates will. Carbon Kevlar will not tolerate impacts from rocks and stones the way steel will.
