My friend, Richard Sacks of Chicago, had a completely restored, pristine 1971 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet. He sold it to a dealer last year, who then "flipped" it at the Gooding-Monterey Auction for an all-in $341,000. I'm told that's a record.  http://www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1971-mercedes-benz-280-se-2-5-cabriolet/

Dick's not happy.

Well, it's not that he's not happy, not at all. I think his words were "I left a lot of money on the table".

But take some stock here--if you want to get the absolute best, highest price, net, is an auction the way to go?  Which location, and which auction house? You could spend a lot of time sorting that out, waiting for the auction, and the results. Hindsight is 20-20. He made a call, the deal was done, and he was onto another collectible car. That's the price of convenience...

Auctions can be tricky. If people go frantic the car can go for much higher than one would ever get by selling it directly to another enthousiast. The problem is that auctioneers recommend to go with no reserve to create the frenzy. If it doesn't work, the car can go for quite less than expected. All the auctioneer risks is to make a little less money that expected. The seller on the other hand, can loose big!

YES, that would be the car we restored 12-14 years ago.. being the highest sold 3.5 cab.  ;D

and currently the highest sold 250se coupe in the world, would be the one we restored as well..  ;)

I think that qualifies for not happy.  He was not happy when I talked with him.

If you knew the answer, why did you ask the question. I think that is called hyperbolising or to Amaricanize it, skiting??????

We don't tend to do that much around here  ::) >:(

John (thelews), Richard is well onto other things now and this is a memory. Working with him on his Jaguar for Concours of America.

Garry, w113savvy (yet another Dan) must be a lawyer.  They are the ones that routinely ask questions that they already know the answer to!  ;) Just asking it, I wouldn't say hyperbolizing and I've not heard the term "skiting" before used in American English. Some might say it's a rhetorical question--others might have, shall we say, a somewhat less pleasant description?

If w113savvy is restoring W111s that get the big bucks, maybe HES the one leaving money on the table!  ;D

I can tell you this: the data plate that the restorer put on that 280SE high-dollar restoration was pretty lame, and wrong regardless of where sourced. The correct data plates have a certain amount of static information etched into the data fields, and the ONLY variable data is the last 8 digits of the VIN which is embossed, not engraved. None of the data plates of the era were engraved, despite the fact that some are offered today as such. Thankfully I put Richard in touch with CraigS from Australia who sorted that out prior to sale, and the car was fitted with a proper plate. Craig provided my data plate, too, and I had it embossed--properly--at another location, and fitted with rivets, not screws. It is surely not original--it's a reproduction--but the best looking reproduction one could hope for.

I've attached a couple of W111 data plates, and you can see what I'm talking about. Should be pretty obvious which is original, and which is a reproduction.  I never got a photo of the corrected reproduction, but would like to assume it was as nicely done as mine was…or the one I accidentally had made for Alfred... :o which he should have in reserve for the next time he needs one.  ;)

Could someone suggest a reason why a couple of my recent posts have been deleted? I was the first response here on this thread with two cars given as examples, a coupe and a cab, that sold for big numbers and that reply is now gone. Is there some issue with referencing certain auction houses or what could have been the issue? Thanks, I just wish to follow the rules if I had inadvertently broken one.

And, you'd be lucky to get it, it's a beauty.

I didn't mean to leave you with an impression that he was brooding, just that he felt he let it go too soon/cheap.  He has lots of other things to move on too, a fabulous collection.

Marrs,

no-one has deleted any posts according to the server logs. I just could not find any posts for you between the 31st of december 2013 and this one. Nor could I find any error messages. That leaves two possibilities:

1. you did not save/post your message before leaving the page (or did not read any error notifications).
2. the system had a temporary glitch and did not save your post in the database. This can happen, but does so very infrequently

Rest assured, if anyone had removed your message for any reason after it had been correctly saved in the database, I'd be able to find it. So it's nothing to do with the content of your message. Please post it again.

Thank you, Peter, for the clarification and assurance that I remain in good graces. :)

I originally offered up these two cars as examples, tho I see since another cab was noted that sold for even more, but perhaps it helps illustrate the trend.
The first car is a 1961 220se coupe that sold for $79,750 at Gooding and Co. in Pebble Beach this summer, nothing special aside from it's condition, which seems to be exceptional. It has no sunroof but is a manual, tho I wonder if others here still feel the manuals sell for more money, it's seems less a concern for buyers I know of these grand tourers than in a more sporty car for example. Hereis the coupe: http://www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1961-mercedes-benz-220-seb-coupe/

The cabriolet I found is a 1971 280SE 3.5 that didn't sell for as much as the record breaker posted earlier but still brought very real money at it's final hammer price of $236,500. Here is that car's listing, also at Gooding and Co.: http://www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1971-mercedes-benz-280-se-3-5-cabriolet-3/

Finally, here is the reference page for Gooding that shows some upcoming cars and their hefty estimates. http://www.goodingco.com/?s=280+se+cabriolet&x=0&y=0

If you'd like to see some recent prices paid for more of these cars, check out the results of the 2014 Scottsdale auction from this past weekend, Jan. 17 & 18, 2014. Seems to be largely 3.5s but worth a look.
