Comedians in Cars - Red Pagoda
« on: February 09, 2014, 01:10:27 »
This episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee features Jerry Seinfeld and Alec Baldwin in a nice red Pagoda...looks to me like the Pagoda is the real star.

For us, unconditional addicts to the car, the red Pagoda would always be THE star. But if you asked Alec B's fans, I bet that they only barely noticed anything around him. :)

Well, what I noticed:

- the rocker panels are in body color rather than Tiefdunkelgrau
- it's a US model judging from the side markers, but the bumper overriders were removed (forgot to check out the headlights, but those are probably Euro)
- the guys give a bad example for not wearing seat belts

Other than that, nice video and beautiful car.

Who are these actors, by the way?

Looks like the red pagoda was restored by Aventuramotors, they link to the video on their homepage.

Cees (and others living in a cave or not paying any attention to USA culture)...if culture is the correct word:

Jerry Seinfeld may be the most successful US stand-up comedian...his TV show was among the most popular ever on US TV.
Reruns are still going strong. The show and its characters (and I mean characters) are among the most iconic and bizarre ever on TV.
The whole point of the show was that is wasn't about anything. Just followed the Seinfeld gang as they went from one stupid situation to another...they never learned.

Jerry is also a collector of old cars. Take a look at this for info:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Seinfeld

Alec Baldwin is film and TV star maybe best known for his role on the "30 Rock" TV show. More at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alec_Baldwin

Cees,
the headlights are US style.

Hans
The video gives the credit to Aventura Motors at the end of it. In which case I am only mildly surprised that certain details such as the rocker panels are not correctly painted and that there is a mismatch on bumpers.

I've watched every one of these episodes and I howl with laughter with every one. They're right up there with Jay's Garage segments.  Make sure you check out the one where the Delorean craps out with Patton Oswald, or the one where he gets pulled over in a Lambo Miura with Chris Rock.  Total Man Camp.  Doesn't make me want to drive a Fiat Jolly though.

Cees, you were being facetious, right?

Yes Mike, I was  ;D

Thanks for posting Richard! Hope you are well, if I ever make it to NY let's have our own coffee; is Doug still in NY? It'd be great to catch up again after so many years.

I've never watched the Seinfeld TV show, basically because I never watch TV.

There is a particular old Saturday Night Live skit with Alec Baldwin and two female SNL cast members that is just hilarious. It's one of the top 10 favorites of all times, according to mojo.com (check it out on Youtube, my personal favorite is 'more cowbell' with Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken):

http://youtu.be/uShCUp2QYGs

The Baldwin skit starts at 7:45, the Cowbell comes right after.

Sorry, back to the Comedians & Coffee!

Hands down the best quote I have ever seen about our cars (warning...you have to be able to laugh at yourself and like Seinfeld humor).  I think I will print it and hang it next to my 250sl.

Hi mwtea,

Good idea :) When I was 26 I drove a new 230 SL that just arrived in Montreal it was too expencive for me then, I would have had to work 3 years to pay it off LOL

Mr. Seinfeld mentioned (on the 1966 Porsche 356) "why the Dutch Police in the 1960's used this car he did not know" I can tell him why in case he ever peeks in here :) The German Police used the Porsche on the Autobahn and I think the Dutch Police finally convinced there Chief that they should have them too to catch the speeding Germans :) We used to call the German Police Porsches "weiße Mäuse" (white mice).  I think the French Police had them also at that time, perhaps Stan knows more about that then I do, I never made it to France until the late 80s (second pic is the French Police visiting Germany to show up there new toys).

I could never imagine the French police riding German cars, Porsche or any other make: jamais de la vie, Monsieur! So your picture comes like a shock :)

What I can remember from the streets, only French cars were used by any French services, police, guards, army etc. In 60s and 70s, the best example of what the French Police used is shown in the movie series with Louis de Funès, such as Le gendarme à Saint-Tropez.
In the 80s Renault Alpine A310 were bought to serve the purpose of catching the speeding drivers, but there were rather few and I never saw one.

In another, quite recent, movie series Le Taxi you can see that the French innovation gives a new spiritus movens to the ubiquitous Peugeot that defeats Mercedes cars and proves that l'impossible n'est pas français...;D

But more seriously, today the French police has invested in Subaru Impreza WRX and this is the new toy that allows them to have fun on motorways.

BTW, a French car maker PGO offers cars that ressemble a lot the Porsche on your picture. Have look

Rolf-Dieter,

If that photograph is of a Dutch police porsche, why does it have "Polizei" on the back? The Dutch used many different Porsche models from 1960 until 1986.

After that they got BMW 320i's (which did not last long reversing at speed on the slip roads), Range Rovers, then Mercedes 190E, and then Volvo 850 and V70.

Hi Stan,

My bad, I guess I got confused by the statement "Autobahnpolizei NRW, Besuch aus Frankreich.jpg" on the following Link;-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bundesarchiv_B_145_Bild-F006700-0005,_Autobahnpolizei_NRW,_Besuch_aus_Frankreich.jpg

The cars shown sure look like Porsches as they are lined up there. I should have known better  ::)

Hi Peter,

I only commented on Seinfeld's statement (see photo) I should have spotted that it did not spell POLITE

I am not saying that these cars aren't Porsches, but only that there is a small car maker in France that currently makes cars that ressemble Porsche.

As for the pic, despite my inexistant German, my google translate helper gives the title of the picture you provided as:
"Demonstration of a half-turn of the highway police of North Rhine-Westphalia for French military professionals". So it confirms that the case were serving in Germany and nor in France. Nothing bad, but I know only too well that France at the time at least would not purchase other cars but the local :D

Stan,
the translator worked well for you.
There is another photo of the visit by French police officers - clearly identifiable by their two-colored caps - inspecting Porsche cars used by the Autobahn Police in Bonn.  The officers in the white jackets are German officers, in this photo with helmets and in the other with of-duty caps.
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bundesarchiv_B_145_Bild-F006699-0005,_Autobahnpolizei_NRW,_Besuch_aus_Frankreich.jpg

Both photos were taken by the same photographer on the same day but in this one the French are identified as "Polizeioffiziere = police officers"  and in KD's as "Militär-Fachleute = military specialists" but are not shown.
