Late down shift automatic
« on: April 02, 2014, 12:17:38 »
Hello Group,

My 250SL shifts very late down, almost at a stand still it goes from 4 to 3 gear, with result that coming out of a corner in 4 it has very low revs, when it down shifts its very smooth.
Gears up shifting is no problem, everything fine, depending on the position of the throttle it shifts late our early, kick down works as well.

Does any one now how to adjust this?

Thanks.

Hi,
correct up- and down-shifting depends on correct modulating pressure (see here Technical Manual). You find the correct values in the workshop manual.

What is the history of this problem? That information can help us diagnose it for you. Vacuum and transmission linkage position can cause shifting problems. Engine vacuum can vary greatly depending on ignition timing etc. The rubber modulator diaphragm is effected by vacuum. Transmission linkage position depend on correct engine linkage adjustment. Transmission modulator linkage must be free (often stuck from rust). The three position soleninoid on the transmission must be functioning and adjusted properly.
Ii would start off by making sure the engine ignition timing is ok and then check the engine linkages. I assume you already checked the fluid level with engine running and on perfectly level ground.

Problem solved,
i cheked the ignition first (forgot to metion that there was olso a low speed knock at 1800-2000 rpm) adjust the timing  (more advance)  and problem is gone,
shift at the correct speed as in the technical manual, and no more knocking under the hood.

Thanks for your tips.
