Ulf,
not sure who deserves the label "idiot", the BMW driver, the Gullwing driver, or the organizers?
According to this report the Sixt brothers (yes, as in SIXT, the car rental company) participated in an uphill race during the current re-enactment of the Mille Miglia and ran directly into the oncoming BMW (driven by the coach of a French volleyball team).  Apparently the road on which they were racing had not been closed to other traffic. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.

Mercedes 300SL Gullwing head on crash
The pain I am feeling to see this is beyond explanation.

From the article:
The accident happened yesterday morning in Tuscia, Italy and involved a black Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing which was participating in this year's reenactment of the open-road Mille Miglia endurance race (1927-1957). The classic 300SL frontally collided with a BMW 1-Series that was heading to Rome, but the cause of the crash is still unknown at the moment.

That should polish out. It'll be fine. (I'm sure Keinle can sort it out).

@Alfred - didn't know that they were racing, that might have been added after I read it. But with values like that, Gullwings are never totaled :-)

So correct, ...............as long as they have the body plate and the bits with any ID numbers stamped on them, the "original" car will rise again.

To quote the mother of the driver: "Nothing bad happened", she is glad that it is only a fender bender. "Live is expensive, but not the sheet metal" .

You gotta watch out for those Bmers passing on corners.  I'm sure the insurance company will cover it, but if not, like mama says its just metal.

Does anyone know how the Italian law works with an accident caused by driver error?  I was told by a state politcia in Sicily, you only get a ticket on the freeway if you cause an accident.  They voted not to have tickets for speeding or the way you drive unless you cause an accident.  Of cource the Sicilians don't consider themselves Italians, so it may be different in real Italy.
