061 Distributor on a 70 280sl
« on: June 12, 2014, 20:59:30 »
I had my motor rebuilt back in June of 2008. Almost 6 years and around 11k miles on the clock, I need a major tune up. My now retired and nowhere to be found mechanic who did the install also rebuilt the distributor in my 70 280SL. I found out last week that my distributor is stamped 061 which I understand is for a 280SE sedan motor. My mechanic may have replaced it upon rebuilding, or it might have been with the car since the 1974 when the dealer replaced the motor as recorded in the dealer-stamped book—I’m not sure. Joe Alexander through forum search gave a list of the matching points, cap, rotor, coil and condenser part numbers for the 061 dizzy.

Upon inspection, the ones installed on mine now (coil, etc) do not match the numbers Joe gave. Do I buy the parts as Joe noted (if still available) or do I use the same part numbers as the old ones since the engine and dizzy just work fine with them?
