Clunk from rear right suspension
« on: August 24, 2004, 17:30:54 »
Hi All,
Recently my '69 developed this clunking noise from the rear right wheel. It would do it on moderate to high braking as well as moderate to high acceleration. I took it to two mechnics who were unable to locate the problem. One replaced the rubber bush (suspension arm to body) and the noise went away for a week or two then came back. Has anyone had this problem before?
Thanks
Raf

Hi Raf,

I think the trailing arm to axle bushings may also need to be replaced.  Sounds like you replaced the donut shaped bushing located where the trailing arm attaches to the body.  At the other end of this arm there are two bushings at the connecting point of the arm and axle.  Have a look at the front and rear sides of the bushing to see if you have metal to metal chafing.  It's a pretty hard job to remove the two large nuts so that you can remove the arm and replace the busings.  The bushings are pressed and then held in place by a metal clip.  I have documentation on this if you like.  Send me an email address and I'll send it to you if you would like.
