Costs for Rechroming Interior Parts
« on: July 11, 2014, 17:48:11 »
Any members out there have recent experience rechroming all of the interior chrome parts?  I'm trying to get an idea of how much it would cost to rechrome all interior parts (minus the door sill trim).  Thanks

I think if anyone had his chrome parts redone it would have been most likely all the. Chrome. Parts (that is what I had done some 10 years ago on my original BMW 535 is that I purchased new in 1987). I therefore expect any feedback you might get would only be a estimate.

I assume you plan to take the parts off yourself. My recommendation would be to  take them to the shop you plan to have the work done (or ship them there). Then let them give you an accurate price.

If this was my project I would also ask the Classic Centre or Budds what they would charge to do the job. This would provide a competitive price/idea what the final cost would be. Anyway my 2 cents ... Good Luck.

PS. Re-chrome work can be tricky, it all depends on the original condition of the part(s). Case in point based on my experience. I lost the little chrome ring around my ignition key barrel last year. I found one on the internet for $50- plus shipping I paid $60- when I got the part it was a re-chromed ring full of pitting. Later when I ordered some other item from the Classic Centre they told me a new one cost $17-  LOL ..... You guessed it I added a new one to my order, the $60- exemplar now hangs in my garage as a reminder never to do this again :)

Nate,

Seconding R-D's voice, the experience in re-chroming depends a lot on the shop you work with. You will find on this forum several posts including about the good re-chroming shops in the US.

However  my experience is that it is a waste of time if your parts are aluminium ones. In such case I would strongly advise to buy the chromed parts made of brass.

Another experience is that quotations at various shops are very indicative and in most cases after they remove the chromed layer they come back to you with the final (read: higher) price.

Good luck

What about this? Has anyone tried going the DIY route for small parts? The smaller kit is expensive, but I think of all the chrome bits a Pagoda onwer could do on his own time, without needing to disassemble a bunch of parts and ship them together at the same time to make a batch for the plater...

You could do your washer nozzle one day, then one door handle the next, etc, you car is never out of commission for too long...

IF..the product is good.

Thoughts?

I have tried this on small parts by zinc plating then doing a chromate but not very successfully.  My failure has always been getting the initial part to a spotlessly clean condition. And when I say spotless, I mean pristine clean of any contaminates.  If you dont then the plating does not adhere well and is patchy.  The other problem I found was that the thickness veried over the part.  I dont know hwy this was occurring, I think because it was done in a small bath.

All up I have not had much success with it.  Still have it but have not done any for a couple of years now.

Chrome plating is an art and should not be attempted at home unless on something of little or no value.
There are professional chrome platers who can't get it right so what chance does the home enthusiast have?

Chrome plating cost depends on the location and the state because of the regulation. In the state of NY, it is most expensive, even more than in Ontario, Canada. I was successful in finding a shop in South Charleston, WV with a cost half what it is in NY. I had to truck the bumper to WV. My advice use Google to shop nationally. I hope this helps.

I am a little late to this party conversation but I have had many chrome parts just re-done at Advanced Custom Chrome in Erie, PA.  You can easily find the website.  fI could find the sheets and tell you about the price for specific parts that were re-chromed.  It is expensive but the results are spectacular.  This shop only takes cash or checks  but the owner is a big car guy and wonderful to talk to.  He would remember talking at length to me.  He is so busy with chrome from all over the world that you have to be patient.
