Rare Pagoda ?
« on: July 23, 2014, 09:49:31 »
Hi all

Have 1966 230sl left hand drive drive one owner. 89000 verified miles and all matching numbers, color code 190g. Have all original manuals and paperwork from day one. Has paperwork travelling to USA buying car in Germany with all these options listed on invoice. Skid plates, roof rack, 3 piece luggage, power steering, leather seats, zf5 gear box, sideways 3rd seat and radio. Also paper work for shipping car to USA with German export plates also. The car has its own journal on everything that was done over the years including days out in it with miles logged off the journey distance etc.  Was just wondering how rare this car is still having all the options in tact with car and original paint, Also original soft top which is like new but with some slight color fade within window. The chassis is like new still nice and clean original with stainless exhaust system fitted.

Thanks

A rare and valuable car (value has probably almost tripled in the last 10 years). Also the first year for the ZF option. What's the interior colour - red? Detailed photos would be much appreciated here. You may be able to polish some of the damage out of the soft top window.

Well the 230 is not that rare, but the list of options and the nice original condition your car seems to be in are not common. The documentation you have is also a plus.

Very rare I'd guess, especially if it's got all the options listed from new still with the car, and 5 speed, and especially if it's never been/doesn't need repairing. I think I speak for everyone here - post some photos,

Hello
Thanks for the replies, No gearbox is fine and never been repaired just well maintained and documented. The interior color is black seat with that two tone fleck color carpet. I will try over next few days to get some piccies uploaded.

Thanks

If it's as good as it looks I think it's very very rare, how did you find it and are you going to use it?

Oh yeah.
The pale wheels look a little strange? And the rockers appear to be body colour.

The wheels look repainted, and I wonder whether the car was repainted, especially because the sills are body color as is more common in the UK.

Looks like the car has had some paintwork done to it due to the sillcover issue and the non matching left front fender color.
Still looks like a very very nice car and with the documented history, all the options and good condition as well as relatively low mileage,
makes it quite a rare find I'd say.

More pictures would be nice.

Very nice car, but did the 230SL's ever come with an antenna on the rear left quarter panel?  They were more prominent in that location on the later 280SL models.  Also I note that the front carpets don't seem to be there as only the ribbed sheet metal floor pan can be seen.  You must have taken them out to be aired?? ;D

I think these are plastic mats that were standard on 230s

Oh I see are they the wide ribbed version as opposed to the finely ribbed type rubber mat in the boot?

Rubber mats and left rear quarter antenna are likely both original! The ribbing is fine like the boot.

Left rear quarter panel aerial is common and correct. The dealer installed radio aerial amy end up anywhere and particularly when they were the Hersham electrical, it was probably easier to fit to the rear for access and space.  Rubber floor mats sure look original to me as they should have been.

While the Pagoda posted and described by the OP may be rare ... I think every Pagoda is somehow rare in it's own way :)

My 1967 Italian version 230SL had the Hirschmann manual antenna exactly where that one is when I bought it in 1987.  Unfortunately I bent it severely a few years ago and have to replace it (this time with an electric one for its own good) while I'm restoring it.

Morning everyone

Wow loads of great replies and much appreciated. Some very interesting comments and have no reason to believe the cars originality. The owner kept very detailed dairy of this car from trips out noting mileage and location, nothing was left out. Anyway getting ready now for  Silverstone classic, Heading off tom morning and weather is looking to be a scorcher.

Thanks
